This product code is KEY: 012170217

    _________________________________________________________

Went to a few different Target stores. Here is the key thing to get this.

    1) Go either to the electronics department or customer service
    2) Ask them to do a \"Merchandise Lookup\" ON THE CASH REGISTER (Ensure that they *do not* try to look up the stock/inventory on the handheld looking price checker thing)
    3) GIve them the product ID–012170217
    4) It will tell them that they have them in stock (or not) and which stores within a certain square mile radius will have them in stock.

This does work, so if you called or visited stores today, please try this. Each store I tried had no more than 3 copies in stock. Surprisingly there are some \"popular\" Target stores that did not get this. I am not sure what Target uses as the selection to determine which stores get which stock, but there are stores that I thought would for sure have this in, but did not. (FYI…I am in the Washington, DC metro area, which has a combined 8 million people between here and Baltimore)…….I have a few more stores to check tomorrow.

Well, so we found this news on Crestfallen:

    http://www.crestfallen.com/2012/04/13/t … -lucky-13/

And since we know their team will follow us closely here, we thought we should try to gather all your recommendations for future Smashing Pumpkins releases here. Shoot, fellow freaks, shoot![/quote:3lvfb2eq]

    #1–who are the selected 13?

#2–what do they expect us to help them with? Helping them decide to setup a model like the Third Man Recrods Valut or Pearl Jam Fan Club?

    #3–How will releases be distributed?

    #4–If I had my way:

    * Adore LP in Stereo (which Billy confirmed would happen at the Philly show)
    * Aeroplane Flies High 5×10" Box Set, individually numbered, with no more than 5,000 copies being made
    * Full Deluxe 4LP Vinyl Box set of Machina I and II sequenced/ordered correctly.
    * Smashing Pumpkins Adore Tour Fox Theater Atlanta show fully released (since I was there and it was filmed in its entirity by Virgin) on DVD/Blu-Ray with CD of show
    * Smashing Pumpkins Adore Tour Grand Ole Opry Show (since it was all acoustic)
    * The Smashing Pumpkins 2000 Summersault Tour Soundboard Live concert released (Recorded by Westwood One)
    * Any Arising shows, or a deluxe "live" boxset of the Arising shows, similar to how Pearl Jam does their bootleg live box set releases

    That’d be a good start.

We published an article about the Tristessa vinyl single frontpage just now, focusing on the grey vinyl version. With many thanks to Pette Discographies for the interview and Derek for writing the article & creating the great artwork to go with it. 8)

The texts on the 3 different uploads of Tristessa have been changed accordingly, I hope you vinyl collecting guys can agree on the changes?

    http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … &item=1125 (black vinyl)

    http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … &item=1126 (grey vinyl)

    http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … &item=1127 (pink vinyl)[/quote:239cau6k]

If the grey vinyl was intentional, then great. It would make sense.

The only thing that I disagree with about the article, or what is neglected……the Nirvana Silver/Dive single was repressed as were several other Sub Pop items by Erika Records because Sub Pop was in major financial problems (close to going out of business bad). That is where all of the different variations of Bleach came into play, after the original White Vinyl version. But the key on any of those is that on the label it does say "pressed by Erika".

Luckily, we know that the Grey Tristessa doesn’t fall into this category, but Petite Discographies should know this, whether they want to admit it or not. That is why Sub Pop isn’t keen to admit it, because who wants to say in a discography "to keep ourselves in business, we had to re-press 8000 copies of Bleach on 15 different color variants"

Regardless if the grey was intended or not, the Tristessa Grey is still just as rare as it was originally. Too bad we can’t find the original pressing invoice for the 7", that’d probably clear this up immediately.

I am going off my memory here and granted, some of the details could be fuzzy. I will try to back them up with facts as best I can. Searching the Netphoria archives hasn’t been as fruitful as I had hoped (plus the site tries to download malware it seems every 30 minutes).

Anyhoo….the details that I recall were this.

I bought CR-01 or CR-02 on Ebay when *everyone* thought for sure it was a bootleg and the EP came out of nowhere. After buying it I posted scans of it and then tried to figure out a way to see if there were others out there. I am pretty sure that I got a complete set from someone at Virgin in LA off Ebay.

Considering this was in the 2000/2001 timeframe, you can see why this is all somewhat sketchy.

    http://forums.netphoria.org/trading-pos … -flac.html

In the above thread, you will see that ASPECIALKID on Netphoria (PM BOX FULL awww) had a full set (hint hint), as well as myself and what Aspecialkid described as \"some Irish sounding guy who posts on the board\" which was O’DOYLE RULES (hint hint)\". Later in that thread it is mentioned that Mike Roche (who I have e-mailed tonight to see if he still has his set) had a set too, supposedly he sold it soon after getting it….

KittyKat1979 said that she had 1 of the CR-OX CDs…HINT HINT
Smashing Turnip said he had 1 of the CR-0X CDs…HINT HINT

    Then in this thread:
    http://forums.netphoria.org/trading-pos … irgin.html

Recast as Child said he found CR-03 and CR-04 at a store…HINT HINT

As for source info: From ASpecialKid:

a long, long, time ago, in a place, far, far away.
billy was still with virgin and was going to release machina 2 in CD form. virgin made a couple \"in house promos\" from tigerghortys \"sp.com webmasters\" machina 2 vinyl.
the top people along with billy were trying to figure out ways to market/release the 4 CD set. it gets a little fuzzy here but billy wanted to release like half of it, and give the second half away for free. virgin, thinking of money said something like we dont even know if we can sell it, why would we give part of it away for free? i guess durring this time was the fallout between virgin and SP.
so in a nutshell BC says fuck it, and just gives it away for free at his website.

So there is some info. I am sure someone else could help you out, but I am pretty certain that no more than 5-10 sets were made. Because the theory was this:

Vinyl made first….CD-Rs made from vinyl to show Virgin Executives to release….Virgin declines….Sets get out.

    Hope that helps somewhat…..

Are you guys proud/happy/etc. to have these? Is this a "special" thingy in your collection? Just curious, as everybody is kinda cool about it…[/quote:mrgt94hj]

As someone who has always been a "numbers" guy in terms of pressing quantity, I would say that these should rank in the area of Grey Tristessa/I Am One Flexi territory. Only 250 copies made each, which makes it extremely limited in terms of the 7" history of the band, which is why I mentioned the Grey Tristessa/I am One Flexi. Plus, with the unexpected nature of release (only 2 locations, with no advance notice), this is pretty cool.

I think these will only increase in value as time goes own, especially if the Teargarden series takes off. Of course, I don’t know how long it will take to release 11 boxsets. At the rate we’ve currently been going, it may be 2020 before it is done…heh.

Personally, I just wish they had spent the extra money and put labels on the 7". They almost look like bootleg productions, but with the 7" pictured in the Teargarden Vol. 1 boxset not having a label either, I guess this is what they decided. At least put "SP" or "Pumpkins" in the run-off groove…heh.

    Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, it’s not really clear how limited this is. Maybe they’re waiting to see how many pre-orders there are before they decide on a number.
I don’t care though. Limited just means they’ll only make a certain amount and then that’s it. Highly limited? Well, it’s all relative. I personally wasn’t expecting a release of only 500 numbered copies.

And I think the price is fair. You’re not just paying for two songs on vinyl. I think that’s a wrong way of thinking. You’re also getting the four free songs, but now on cd. That’s also worth something. And apparently, the cd also contains instrumentals. And it comes in a nice box. (I assume nobody cares about that obelisk, so let’s not add it to the calculation.)

I’m not pre-ordering yet though. I have my doubts about the April 20th release date.[/quote:1w0vkm05]

From a sales scan posted on Netphoria, it appears that only 10,000 will be made. Also, on the flyer/sales sheet. 99 boxes will have a "different" obelisk, so go figure. Of all the things to change. How about 99 boxes have the vinyl on red vinyl? Or 99 boxes have a poster/lithograph type art print.

I find it sad that we have to hear about this release from Amazon/Insound before the band can release any info on it officially on their own website. As I recall, weren’t these supposed to go on sale via the website first anyway? And weren’t these EPs supposed to be super limited?

I’ll still buy it, but I just wish the SP camp would get their shit together. Remember this is what Billy C said himself:

\"We will however sell highly limited edition EPs (of 4 songs each times 11), and details of how those EPs will be made available are still being worked out. Because the songs themselves will be free, the EPs will be more like collectors items for the discerning fan who will want the art itself, along with the highest possible audio quality available.\"

So $30 for basically 2 new songs on vinyl and a hand-carved \"leopard stone\" obelisk? And it isn’t even numbered!! Ugh. I wish I could be a part of planning a limited edition release. Lord knows I bought so many of the past 20+ years, I know what adds value and what doesn’t.

in reply to: Siamese singles test pressings #38342

Hello everyone. This is my first post after having registered a short while ago and visited many times. I have a small Smashing Pumpkins collection (I’d like to acquire more–who wouldn’t?), and one item I have always wanted to find more out about since I got it almost ten years ago. It is a test pressing set of the Siamese singles. They are all on black vinyl in plain white sleeves, with plain white labels. I’m sure you all know what I’m talking about. I was wondering two things:

    1. Does anyone else have a set of these or ever seen them?
    2. Does anyone have an idea what they might be worth, individually or as a set?[/quote:7a6oe4a8]

To close this topic out and put the final nail in the coffin:

    1) Yes. There are individual 7" test pressings for both the boxset (black vinyl) and separate colored vinyl versions. I believe that at the height of my collection I had the following:

Cherub Rock Clear 7" Test Press
Cherub Rock Black 7" Test Press
    Today Red 7" Test Press
    Today Black 7" Test Press
    Disarm Purple 7" Test Press
    Disarm Black 7" Test Press
    Rocket Black 7" Test Press

The only one I missed was the Rocket Peach 7" test press.

Also, just so you know, test pressings would not have come with the box. The box was made for the commercial release to give to the public. Test pressings are made to give to the label to check the sound quality of the 7" before production. Might there be some sample boxes, similar to the prototypes for the AFH box? Possibly, but I’ve never seen one. So if you acquire this set, you are just getting the singles only, no box.

    2) As for value, that is always conjecture (what someone is willing to pay for an item, and it differs for each person) and you could probably be safe to assume $100-$150 for each. As for which ones (colored v. black) would be rarer, well I will leave that up for discussion.

    Regards.

    Shawn

    * The Cream De La Crem. Coming out 11/3/09 is the following boxset:

Atlantic Recording Corporation is proud to present the Time Capsule. The Ultimate collectors Limited Edition box set containing 130 timeless tracks spanning six decades of musical history. The Atlantic Time Capsule was created in the same spirit that infused the label’s very beginnings. Just as the company’s founders, to quote Ahmet, "We started Atlantic simply because we wanted to sign a few artists whose music we liked, and make the kind of records that we would want to buy," Atlantic set out to assemble a collection that would tell a story that we as listeners would want to hear. From the onset, the idea was to present Atlantic Records “from the inside.”

The collection was compiled by a small group of passionate Atlantic staffers, who drew on rarely seen material from the company’s archives, Ahmet’s personal papers, and the work of staff photographers through the years. This unique package design contains a full color 128 page book filled with unseen “from the inside” images as well as a collection of reproduced memorabilia including: a backstage pass, handbills, posters, ticket stubs and other vintage swag. Each set is completed by an individually numbered certificate of authenticity.

    Vinyl Version contains:
    • 16 Pieces of 180 gram Vinyl : 130 tracks
    • 8 double Gatefold Jackets
    • 128 page Full Color Hard Cover Book
    • Each Piece is numbered for authenticity
    • Backstage Pass, Handbills, Posters, Ticket Stubs,
    • Vintage Swag

    Includes Tracks By:
    Ray Charles
    Aretha Franklin
    Ben E King
    Bobby Darin
    Sony & Cher
    Led Zeppelin
    Emerson Lake and Palmer
    Genesis
    YES
    Bette Midler
    INXS
    Matchbox Twenty
    Stone Temple Pilots
    T.I.
    Kid Rock
    John Coltrane
    Charles Mingus
    The Drifters
    Twisted Sister
    Don Covay
…and many others from the Atlantic family

Can’t wait to see the price on that thing….ugh.

So basically, I could continue going on and on. This is a trend and it is quite successful. The 10,000 copies of the TEN Deluxe boxset that sold through PJ.COM, Indie Music Stores and Best Buy all sold through. Meaning, if you don’t own one and see it in your Best Buy or Music Store, pick it up, because no more are being made.

I love these types of boxsets and hope that the Pumpkins come out with something extremely creative. My main issue with the Pixies boxset mentioned in the article is that this is now the 4th or 5th iteration of Pixies vinyl….you had Mobile Fidelity versions, Simply Vinyl versions, Original Versions, Deluxe Heavyweight Versions. I mean how many times can you release the same shit over and over??

Other than that, hope everyone is doing well.

I just picked this one up on eBay for 50.01 bucks, but there’s another one for Buy It Now US$ 199.99.

    [/quote:1zq7elo1]

This item is curious. I too, saw the Ebay auction and did look up the McClusky’s website. However, there were a few things that really cautioned me from bidding:

    a) The picture of the CD. Ok, as the story states, this is one of the largest music promotion companies in the US and that is the best they can do for a CD? I sure as hell wouldn’t want them promoting my band with that type of shoddy production.

    b) The tracklisting. So this was released in the late 90’s, but yet really only features tracks from the MCIS singles that came in the AFH boxset. So they couldn’t have released anything form the Gish/Siamese/Adore era’s?? That just doesn’t make sense.

    c) The Cheap Trick track. Why would a promotion company, promote another band, instead of their main client? It’d be one thing if you wanted to include a COVER (e.g. Never Let me Down, Landslide, etc.), but to inlcude a "live" track with another band? That just doesn’t make sense at all.

    d) The 1st appearance. As collector’s, we’ve pretty much seen everything. I find it odd that this is the first time that we’ve seen/heard of this CD. You’d think that at least a few copies would have been on sale prior to this. Plus, have we seen any other McClusky CDs on Ebay for some of the other artists they promote??

I really hope this CD is the real deal, but there were just too many red flags for me to bid.

It is $1025 now, but the problem I have with an auction like this is all the bidders with 0 feedback and/or newly created ebay users. I hate it when something rare pops up, and all these deadbeat losers crawl out of the woodwork to bid on stuff they have no intention of paying for. The seller could maintain credibility by deleting all bids from those with zero feedback. That is how the price got driven up in the first place, was a bidding war between someone with 600+ feedback and someone with 0. Nice.

Melissa, the Zwan members (included just because), Lisa, etc?

I heard Melissa was actally good, but I’ve still yet to own anything or hear anything she’s ever written. I feel like just because these people were in the Smashing Pumpkins, I don’t really care what they do after they leave. I have no interest in Lisa’s new Jazz album, who cares?

Even former official members, James and Jimmy. I honestly don’t give two hoots about their solo albums. I semi enjoyed Iha’s Be Strong Now, as it was a temporary departure from the Pumpkins. Lately, members are leaving and never coming back, to do something different than be a Pumpkin. I don’t know if I’m making any sense here, but bottom line I guess is that it’s always been about Billy Corgan for me. He’s always been the main driving force behind the band.

The only thing that scares me a little is Billy without Jimmy. He’s done it before, to great critical success with Adore, but I wonder if that was a fluke. And Billy has done a solo album which I find tremendously enjoyable, but I don’t want Smashing Pumpkins to sound like that.

Nor do I want more American Gothic acoustic happy shit. I guess I’m hard to please, it would seem I can’t win. I just hope Billy is able to succeed on his own, a part of me feels sorry for him, like all his friends turned their backs on him and he doesn’t know why. I’ve had that happen to me before and the feeling is horrible.

But back on track, if you’re not in the Pumpkins or coming back, go to hell.[/quote:1w9m7r05]

I pretty much am in agreement with this.

I feel, as you, that SP = BC. Everyone else are contributors and/or along for the ride.

I would take exception to your comment about Adore possibly being a fluke. A tthe time, after his mother died, he made a very emotional, personal album. Which is a very deep album that requires dozens of listening attempts to fully appreciate, in my opinion. Could he do it again? Absolutely. But if you look at some of the recent stuff FOL, GLOW, etc., I don’t think he will go down an "Adore" road for a new album.

Some of the American Gothic stuff is good and remember, anything acoustic can always be turned electric live, so there is hope there.

As for me, I’ve only followed Zwan (who I liked a lot and hope that some more rarities come out down the road) and Billy’s solo album, TFE, which is good. When you state that you don’t want the Pumpkins to sound like that, you could argue that Eye and Saturnine were very close to the TFE framework.

But at the end of the day, SP is a rock band and Billy seems to want to continue to rock. As long as he does, then I’m happy and content.

Finally, on a side note, I personally thought that Iha’s LICD was one of the worst albums ever made….EVER. I thought I was listening to something from TIME LIFE’s AM GOLD series. Not only can he not sing (hello Willam "She Bangs" Hung), but the fact he chose to essentially make a 70’s love/peace album for his 1st solo record was baffling to me. That was the quickest tirp I’ve made to sell a cd back after buying it ever. If someone gave me that CD or vinyl today, you’d see me recycle it for toliet paper. ;)
