manillascissorKeymasterRemember how everyone thinks The Black Sessions is nothing more than an elaborate FR bootleg? Well I was perusing the Radiohead discography and found this promo from their collection, from France.

amnesiaSpectatorLet me get this straight. You saying the Smashing Pumpkins The Black Sessions is not a bootleg?

manillascissorKeymasteryeah. it would appear that way. to me.
i’d like some other opinions of course, but it seems legitimate to me. this radiohead promo is from ’93, waaaaaaaaaaay before people had access to making their own CDs. well, at least, one’s this elaborate.

Cool As Ice CreamSpectatori disagree with you, manilla.
black sessions is a real show. the logo also exists.
but that doesn’t make the many bootlegs any less of a bootleg.just to make it clear: i’m not saying this radiohead release is a bootleg. but the sp one is.
i believe frank black also has an official \"black sessions\" release. let me have a look for that one.
edit: can’t really find much, but here’s something: http://www.amazon.com/Black-Sessions-Li … B000007TU7 -

Cool As Ice CreamSpectatorthe bootlegs in the grey sleeves have only been around for a couple of years. they weren’t released in 1993. right?

ArthurSpectatorLet me show the CD of that SP Black Sessions boot, and then I rest my case!

yeah, it says 2008 right on the CD that arthur shows. i guess it is a bootleg then. i guess i should be happy, because i never bought this, but i really thought i discovered something here.
why wouldn’t "the black sessions" officially release something then? why have a show and not release it?

manillascissorKeymasteralso, the en concierto en mexico CD is a CDR and made for a radio station with a virgin logo, but somehow it’s legitimate?
i don’t see how one is more official than the next. i think france inter probably hired sangatte records to make these CDs. does that make them bootlegs? not necessarily.
i don’t know. i’m still not convinced either way.

Not made for, but made by… with permission from the band/label. That’s the difference. -

You’re wrong. http://www.sangatterecords.tk/
Here’s some info on the Black Sessions by "an outfit known as Sangatte Records": http://www.freewebs.com/blacksessions/
Anyway, almost everywhere you go, Sangatte Records is referred to as a bootleg company. Only by the looks of the CD-R you could already notice that, dear collectors, come on!

if it WERE to be REAL…
why include obvious spelling errors in the song titles???
and:
why TWICE include ‘Creep’ on this EP???
‘The Black Sessions’ are cool.
These are heavily bootlegged. Were. Have been. Are. Remains the case.Logo’s on a disc don’t mean ‘shit’…
Anyone can copy these unto a disc. There have been really BAD examples of FAKE ‘Earphoria’ cds and there have been some reasonably GOOD examples.
For even more valuable releases (some vinyl singles even, for example: by Nirvana!!!) some got really close to the original. Then there’s the point of a non-commercial EVER released cd, but owowow… !!!!
There’s a really really really rare PROMO out there!
Even easier, much easier! The ones for: The Smashing Pumpkins: FAKE / BOOTLEG!
The Radiohead one: FAKE / BOOTLEG!All of this can be traced and researched back to the source.
There IS no source for these things.
Other than the broadcast and some people trying to make a quick buck off of some collectors. It’s all BOOTLEG-BOGUS.

point in case is:
1. En Concerto en Mexico > fully endorsed, researched and all, sanctioned and OK’d very very very LOW KEY "release"… by the label and/or the artist…
2. The Black Sessions > look at the list… why would a radio station promo these recordings out in the first place in this pressing amount and to whom, in the first place, in these numbers? and how in the world would they get the copyrights??? nope: just re-read only the copyright lines for several ‘live’ takes by The Smashing Pumpkins released and you’ll see how this is worked-out… No way someone in Paris would be able to go through all the hassle of securing the rights and all for these promo’s, let alone: the duplication and distribution and all… nope: it just doesn’t add up; it just doesn’t work like that…

Cool As Ice CreamSpectatorha, well spotted, sven. i didn’t really look at the radiohead cd. but now that you mention it, it does look shady too.
anyway, my point was, even if that radiohead cd is a real promo, that doesn’t prove anything about the sangatte records releases.sometime last year dazey shared a rip of his copy of the smashing pumpkins \"black sessions\" cd. i just checked the quality of the audio, and it is without a doubt mp3 sourced. so there you go. another argument. i haven’t listened to it recently, but i seem to remember this \"promo\" has all the imperfections the widely available recording of this show has, such as djs speaking over the music, etc.
another dodgy thing: check out the 3 different versions of the same cd here (a raveonettes \"black sessions\" cd): http://www.therebelinvaders.dk/Rave_Sit … ection.php
they’re not even made in the same year.
i think someone is just making extra copies as soon as the stock sold out.also, these are numbered. \"limited edition.\"
numbering promo cds is bollocks. it’s so typical for bootlegs. -
2009.11.12 at 5:46 pm #39907
manillascissorKeymasterJust for the record…
Spelling mistakes occur ALL THE TIME on official promos.
Two versions of Creep is also not a surprise, as that has probably one of the most widely circulated radio edits ever.
With that said, I’m no Radiohead collector, I’ll leave that to them to decide.
And finally, I give up. The Black Sessions (Pumpkins style) is a bootleg.
