ArthurSpectatorHello. I am new to this site but have found it to be a good resource to me thus far. My boyfriend is quite the Smashing Pumpkins fan and I would like to find one of their vinyl records as a Christmas gift for him. I have been looking and have come across a few things on eBay, but am unsure of whether or not these are original or fake, as I am well aware of the abundance of fake items on eBay. If anyone here could take a look at these listings and let me know their opinion on them, I would greatly appreciate it. I have also been looking through the listings on this website, but have been getting error messages every time I attempt to respond to one.

amnesiaSpectatorHi Ellen.
All the links you posted are orginal vinyl, no bootlegs, however the Lull and the Siamese Dreams are way to expensive, so you should try to to win the Mellon Collie and the red vinyl Today, since the price of those particular items are ok, well Today is, but Mellon Collie is maybe tin wine expensive, but however, i guess this is the normal price for this set of vinyl Well good luck with the christmas present

sfc_txSpectatorThank you very much for your help, Amnesia. I don’t know quite so much about the Pumpkins as he does, and I can’t ask his opinion on any of these at this point, obviously. Would you mind taking a look at the other two listings that I have posted below? I am considering trying to acquire these two. They are from a store in Colorado and after speaking with someone from that store earlier today, I was told that they are both indeed original copies, produced in their respective years. Disarm is one of his favorite songs and I do think he would love that one.

SvenSpectatortotally agree with Amnesia—
however:
the SD LP signed does look pretty cool and amazing…
i’d say that would be the most amazing present!
(curious to know if this plays ok with the signatures on the vinyl itself )) but still… )best of luck with the auctions and don’t forget to check around on the web, sometimes stuff turns up pretty cheap, i.e.: for a lot less than on ebay. sometimes though it’s the other way around: just make sure to wade your way across the web!!!)

sfc_txSpectatorThank you as well, Sven. Do you think I can count on the signatures being authentic, though? And that is a good thought concerning whether or not the record will play. He has an old record player and will undoubtedly want to put the record on there and hear it.

sfc_txSpectatorAnd also, was there a limited edition vinyl single of Cherub Rock or something? The same store that has posted the above two has posted this one as well, and the vinyl sleeve is numbered, although the only one that I have encountered information about being limited in its production was Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, so I am just curious as to whether this one may be limited as well.

Cool As Ice CreamSpectatorall vinyl linked so far is real/official. (most bootlegs on ebay are copies of mellon collie or pisces iscariot.)
the signatures on that siamese dream vinyl are real. no doubt about that.
it’s a shame d’arcy’s signature isn’t there though. but still, that seems a very cool item. -

mirrorboxerSpectatorFrom what I see, every has been real. My only concern is the autos. They look real to me but I am never certain when it comes to handwriting. Also, I would be concerned with playing over the autos. I am a stickler for condition so I will try to not comment on that in my response.
I think that Lull is WAY overpriced. I bought a copy not long ago for a fraction of the price.
Mellon Collie is more than a bit damaged, I would suggest buying a new copy of Siamese Dream which can be had for less than $15. You can check retailers such as amazon.com for one. The autos are cool, but if he’s going to play the record, new is the way to go. plus it will save you alot of money that you can put towards buying a far nicer copy of Mellon Collie.
Today is ok but remember that you would be getting one of the two songs on this single on the Siamese Dream album. Plus I dont’ know how you feel about ex condition.
Ask more if you need help.

sfc_txSpectatorThank you so much for all of your help. I would definitely like to go for the Disarm 7\", as I am sure he would like that one. I think the Lull would be awesome, and I haven’t found it elsewhere thus far, but if it truly is overpriced I will give it a little thought first. The fact that it is listed as mint did scare me a little, as it seems that something printed in 1991 couldn’t have stayed quite so nice over all those years, but I will take your word that it is genuine. I know he wouldn’t care so much about the condition as long as the record plays well, so the Mellon Collie is also one I will consider, as he has mentioned that album in particular before as well. And just a curiosity, but is the print on the Lull raised or something, or does it just look to be so? I wasn’t sure if it was just printed that way or actually raised in some way. Also, would ya’ll comment on one more listing for me? I have linked it below.

DanniSpectatorThe Lull sleeve is not embossed, if that’s what you’re wondering. And yes, $75 is waaay to overpriced. You should be able to get that one from $10-15 minimum….
You could always keep your eyes on this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi … K:MEWAX:IT

sfc_txSpectatorThank you much for that link. And the consensus seems to be that the Lull is overpriced. I may stick with Disarm, and one of the others, possibly trying for the one that you just posted.

sfc_txSpectatorHa ha. I would love to get it, but there was a note in there that the shipping may be delayed, and I do need it by Christmas, so I may forgo it completely. Good luck if you are bidding on that one. It seems to have climbed pretty high already.

sfc_txSpectatorI have found this Disarm vinyl in better condition than the other, and was wondering if someone could tell me whether these two appear to be real as well. Thank you again.

Depends. It’s very rare, but it contains just one track (I Am One, album version) that can also be found on other vinyl releases. Also, this is a flexi. Not the most durable format for music. This is expensive collector’s material and not really something you buy to put on your record player very often. -
2010.12.15 at 1:14 pm #42543
ArthurSpectatorAnd the other 2 vinyls are real too.

sfc_txSpectatorIs a flexi definitely playable, though? And is the life of it significantly shorter than a regular vinyl?
-
2010.12.15 at 7:22 pm #42545
Cool As Ice CreamSpectatoryes, you can definitely play a flexi. check out the wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flexi_disc
i don’t know if the lifetime of a flexi disc is necessarily shorter – it’s not mentioned on wikipedia either – but i would guess it is. (someone correct me if i’m wrong, please.)
a flexi disc is definitely more vulnerable than a normal vinyl record. it’s very thin, so it can get dented or creased, which will affect playback. -
2010.12.15 at 7:36 pm #42546
mirrorboxerSpectatorLifetime of a flexi…interesting. I dont’ know but I can guess and give a vague answer.
It depends how many times you play the record. The more you play, the deeper the groove gets. The greater the tracking force, the deeper the groove. Flexi disc are very, very thin (as mentioned already) so I can’t imagine a long life before significant distortion or some other unfortunate outcome. That is why alot of cassette dubbing was done years ago. To preserve very thin vinyl records when companies were getting cheap on material. That and cassettes were portable.
On a side note, Did anyone here win the daughter flexi yesterday? I wanted to win it but bidding got expensive in the last 20 seconds.

sfc_txSpectatorI missed that I Am One promo on Ebay. Does anyone here have one that they are looking to sell?
On second thought, I should give that one a little research first. But if anyone would be looking to sell such a copy, please do still let me know.
