When I was checking eBay, this auction got my attention: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi … 0569176951

Interesting to see a promo copy up for sale. On the other hand, it’s only a normal copy with a sticker. And it’s quite expensive already.
But this part of the description got me thinking:

There is also what appears to be a slight printing error – a horizontal line about a third of the way up. It is on the front and back, but not on the inside of the gatefold. The copy I’m keeping (#3246) has the same error. Please see the pictures.[/quote:2x8ictkx]

When I checked my copies, I found the same error on the copy with number 3099. The numbers 11799 and 16771 don’t have this line. The second, unnumbered pressing copy is also line-free.
The line on the front runs through the lower hand. The line on the back is between the tracklist of side 4 (twilight) and side 5 (midnight).

I was wondering if everyone could check their copies. Maybe we can find a pattern. A link between the number and the line on the sleeve. The line looks like their printer was a bit dirty. So it’s likely that it only appears on one range of numbers, and that they fixed this once they noticed.
This is all very geeky, but I find it interesting. So please, check your copy or copies and report back here. Thank you.

Please don’t include the bootlegged copies. In other words, if there is no white box in the lower right corner at the front of the sleeve, with or without number, we don’t want to know about it.

      List so far:

      eBayer:
      3246: line
      3247: line

      me:
      3099: line
      11799: no line

Maybe it was the original intended 5000 copies which have this.

      nr < 6.000

i would not make too much out of this…
some sleeves were printed with a line, some without…
shit happens in printing enormous amounts of sleeves in hi-res…

      it’s basically not a misprint…

      it’s just that the printer had a miss-hap somewhere…

true examples of rare fuck ups are some copies of Today 7\" where the label is literally ON the vinyl and thus off centre and misplaced… :)))

this is just one example, there are many more…

i know. i just want to see if we can find out where. i know it’s not important, but why not give it a go? it gives everyone the opportunity to take their copy in their hands and look at it from a new perspective.

true and nothing wrong with holding a copy of the MCIS vinyl in your hands :)

if you say there’s no line on your copy, did you actually check it, or do you trust your memory?

i hadn’t noticed the line myself before i read about it. i must’ve never really paid much attention to this copy.

many sources say there were 20,000 numbered copies, but this copy proves otherwise.

interesting pattern, if all our assumptions about some of those unclear ebay copies are correct.
let’s keep doing this for a bit longer.

      here’s an overview so far.
the thesis that all copies with a line are from one range of numbers still stands.
it would be interesting to find out more about some copies in our \"question mark\" ranges, in order to get a better idea what the \"line\" range exactly is.

it’s fine. we believe you. maybe the line started showing up on the back, and then a bit later also showed up on the front.
