      A while back there was some discussion going on here and elsewhere if we could technically say the Pumpkins date from 1987. But in 2000, during the farewell tour, Billy Corgan said in front of Dutch tv cameras that the Smashing Pumpkins date from 1972. The ultimate proof is here.
