Not to dredge in misery, but we’ve touched on this subject before. What songs would you (SERIOUSLY) want played at your funeral?

I’ve not given this much thought, so I have nothing to contribute at this time.

Remember, funerals are about celebrating life, not mourning it, so hopefully you don’t think I’m gonna off myself or something. I’m just curious.

aw, i know it’s hard every time you hear one of those songs. it’s hard when i hear a few elvis songs that my grandmother really loved.

In Holland, on a standard funeral, we can pick 3 songs for the ceremony. I have many times thought that I wanted 3 Smashing Pumpkins songs to be played, but sometimes I think I should not do that. There are so many more bands I like that should be honored. So, for the moment I stick to these 3.

Smashing Pumpkins – Soma (this one WILL be played, whatever happens)
Rainbow – Stargazer

it’s weird, just how different other cultures than our own seem to be. if we never talked to each other online then we would never learn so many different things about other places in the world

Yeah, here in Holland it’s rather standard. The whole ceremony takes about 45 minutes, up to 1 hour, and when people enter the room with the coffin, then the first song is being played. In the middle of the ceremony there is song #2, and at the end, when people slowly leave the room again, there is song #3. Around the songs there is poetry and speeches and religious crap for the people that think they have been called by their gods. All funerals I’ve been to were kinda like this. There was one that had a band playing the songs live, instead of stereo based. For example, when my Mum died last year, I picked 3 songs of the Greek singer Nana Mouskouri (in Greek language: Nάνα Μούσχουρη) for her, as she put in her will…

Yeah, my mom and stepfather have provided me a list of songs to choose from that they want played at their funeral. It sucks thinking about it, but is nice to get out of the way so you’re not overwhelmed with all the little choices when they do pass. It’s best to have it all planned out.

my parents have their stuff together I think..as much as I love my parents and will end up being the one who handles all that stuff, yes, I said stuff..sometimes I would just love to see how my 2 brothers could handle that..lol

Hehe, yeah, I know. But I have a long long history with that song, and especially with this version of Frijid Pink. First of all, it fucking ROCKS. The phrase "Oh mother, tell your children not to do what I have done" is giving me goose bumps. Same with that guitar sounds. Secondly, we did a rendition of House Of The Rising Sun with my band De Olijcke Nood (The Happy Need) on a Dutch text about the school we were attending at that time, when I was like 17-18 years old. Later, when I was a political activist in my twenties, I did another rendition of this song with a few others, on a political camp weekend, with a professional blues band that played there on Saturday night. So I was on stage again, doing this song again. So cool, so many memories…

That other song "This Is The Life I Live" is an early 1960’s song from a Dutch garagerock band called Q65. They are from Den Haag, the place I live now. It’s a song that has given me a lot of self-esteem over the years, that I owe nobody anything, welll, in a way, hope you get what I mean. That other band above "Hallo Venray" (did anyone listen already? What do you think? ) is also from Den Haag, by the way.

Now that I’m getting into this subject anyway, there is another song that is on my list. It’s from a Frisian band called Reboelje (when 1 of the singers left a few years ago, they renamed themselves to Swee). There is an ugly version of their song "Dream Hynder" (Dream Horse) on YouTube, but the studio version is way better. Goose bumps also. Try it anyway, if you like. It’s about a guy that wants to follow his dream horse everywhere it goes, away from the earthly sorrows. But nobody will understand that I guess, as it’s sung in the Frisian language, hehehe!

As I can probably only have 3 songs to be played on my funeral, I always had the idea of giving the people that attend my funeral a cd with my most favourite songs, like 10 or 15 of them. I’ll come back with other songs that are going to be on that cd (16 Horsepower, Earth And Fire (NOT to be mistaken with Earth, Wind And Fire! ) and others). I’m starting to like this topic!

When I went to Mexico, we saw a video on our way to Chichen Itza about "Day of the Dead" "Dia de los Muertos" and I was shocked to know that there are people that spend the night in the cemetery, next to graves with cakes and stuff like that!

"Mexicans visit cemeteries, decorate the graves and spend time there – in the presence of their deceased friends and family members. They also make elaborately decorated altars (sometimes called ofrendas) in their homes to welcome the spirits."

"The spirits are greeted with offerings of food and things that the person enjoyed in life. These are laid out on a Day of the Dead altar in the family home. yeah i’ve heard about that. when i was in texas they had lots of day of the dead stuff in the gift shops. i took a pic of a cemetary… it is a very old one next to the ghost town in Terlingua, TX. we left to come home the day before their celebration took place.
