manillascissorKeymasterNot to dredge in misery, but we’ve touched on this subject before. What songs would you (SERIOUSLY) want played at your funeral?
I’ve not given this much thought, so I have nothing to contribute at this time.
Remember, funerals are about celebrating life, not mourning it, so hopefully you don’t think I’m gonna off myself or something. I’m just curious.

manillascissorKeymasterthis was played at my grandmother’s funeral. made me choke up big time.
Billie Holiday – I’ll be seeing you
I’ll be seeing you
In all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces
All day through.In that small cafe;
The park across the way;
The children’s carousel;
The chestnut trees;
The wishin’ well.I’ll be seeing you
In every lovely summer’s day;
In every thing that’s light and gay.
I’ll always think of you that way.I’ll find you
In the morning sun
And when the night is new.
I’ll be looking at the moon,
But I’ll be seeing you.I’ll be seeing you
In every lovely summer’s day;
In every thing that’s light and gay.
I’ll always think of you that way.I’ll find you
In the morning sun
And when the night is new.
I’ll be looking at the moon,
But I’ll be seeing you. -

manillascissorKeymasterAnd my father’s funeral:
Eric Clapton – Tears in Heaven
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heavenWould you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven
I’ll find my way, through night and day
Cause I know I just can’t stay
Here in heavenTime can bring you down
Time can bend your knee
Time can break your heart
Have you begging please
Begging please(instrumental)
Beyond the door
There’s peace I’m sure.
And I know there’ll be no more…
Tears in heavenWould you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heavenCause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven -

ArthurSpectatorIn Holland, on a standard funeral, we can pick 3 songs for the ceremony. I have many times thought that I wanted 3 Smashing Pumpkins songs to be played, but sometimes I think I should not do that. There are so many more bands I like that should be honored. So, for the moment I stick to these 3.
Hallo Venray – Tuck, The Man
Smashing Pumpkins – Soma (this one WILL be played, whatever happens)
Rainbow – StargazerPlease, listen to that first song of Hallo Venray. It’s heartbreaking. I just listened again, and I get all teary…

Tuck is a man
and he likes to be a man
and he knows he can love a woman that wayTuck wants to be an actor
he doesn’t mention it that much
he says it’s a dream but it doesn’t payTuck was good at school
that’s where he met his first girlfriend
and he’s still with her up to this dayTuck has a job
and he likes to work hard
and he knows he can pay the bills he has to payone day I’m gonna be an actor
and sing a song to the girl I’m after
I’ve been waiting so long I want to have her
and my love is so strong
I’ll die if I won’ t have herand when I get to her lips
we’ll give a kiss
and fill the emptiness
we felt so long in our heartsshe’ll be the one with the sun in her eyes
she’ll be the one with the sun in her eyes
she’ll be the one with the sun with the sun with the sun in her eyesTuck is a man
and he likes to be a man
and he knows he can love a woman that wayTuck is doing the best he can
and he says doing less
would be wrong the wrong thing to doone day I’m gonna be an actor
and sing a song to the girl I’m after
I’ve been waiting so long I want to have her
and my love is so strong
I’ll die if I won’ t have herand when I get to her lips

amnesiaSpectatorI haven´t thought about it either really, maybe this song with Depeche mode called Death´s Door
Well I’m knocking on Death’s door
Will I take my rest
Among the blessed?Mother are you waiting?
Father are you pacing?
I’m coming homeI’m knocking on Death’s door
come to take my rest
In my sunday best?Mother are you anxious?
Father are you gracious?
I’m coming homeI’ve been away so long
For so long it was strong
I’ve been away so long
I know that it was wrong
But I’m coming homeWell I’m knocking on Death’s door
Will I take my rest?
Have I passed the test?Mother are you praying?
Father I’m saying
I’m coming home -

I think it’s just a cultural difference… when i read the topic i was like \"wow! they really play songs in a funeral?! \" and then i read Arthur’s post and i was like \"wow! 3 songs in a funeral!\"I NEVER heard a song in a funeral…. never! and i didn’t know that somewhere else that’s normal…

last_rose_of_summerSpectatorit’s weird, just how different other cultures than our own seem to be. if we never talked to each other online then we would never learn so many different things about other places in the world

Yeah, here in Holland it’s rather standard. The whole ceremony takes about 45 minutes, up to 1 hour, and when people enter the room with the coffin, then the first song is being played. In the middle of the ceremony there is song #2, and at the end, when people slowly leave the room again, there is song #3. Around the songs there is poetry and speeches and religious crap for the people that think they have been called by their gods. All funerals I’ve been to were kinda like this. There was one that had a band playing the songs live, instead of stereo based. For example, when my Mum died last year, I picked 3 songs of the Greek singer Nana Mouskouri (in Greek language: Nάνα Μούσχουρη) for her, as she put in her will… -

manillascissorKeymasterYeah, my mom and stepfather have provided me a list of songs to choose from that they want played at their funeral. It sucks thinking about it, but is nice to get out of the way so you’re not overwhelmed with all the little choices when they do pass. It’s best to have it all planned out.

[/quote:257xgk6k]Interesting pic for a funeral.
"Various places in New Orleans, Louisiana have been proposed as the inspiration for the song, with varying plausibility. The phrase "House of the Rising Sun" is often understood as a euphemism for a brothel, but it is not known whether or not the house described in the lyrics was an actual or fictitious place. One theory speculated the song is about a daughter who killed her father, an alcoholic gambler who had beaten his wife. Therefore, the House of the Rising Sun may be a jail-house, from which one would be the first person to see the sun rise (an idea supported by the lyric mentioning "a ball and chain," though that phrase has been used as slang to describe marital relationships for at least as long as the song has been in print). Because the song was often sung by women, another theory is that the House of the Rising Sun was where prostitutes were detained while they were treated for syphilis. Since cures with mercury were ineffective, going back was very likely."

Hehe, yeah, I know. But I have a long long history with that song, and especially with this version of Frijid Pink. First of all, it fucking ROCKS. The phrase "Oh mother, tell your children not to do what I have done" is giving me goose bumps. Same with that guitar sounds. Secondly, we did a rendition of House Of The Rising Sun with my band De Olijcke Nood (The Happy Need) on a Dutch text about the school we were attending at that time, when I was like 17-18 years old. Later, when I was a political activist in my twenties, I did another rendition of this song with a few others, on a political camp weekend, with a professional blues band that played there on Saturday night. So I was on stage again, doing this song again. So cool, so many memories…That other song "This Is The Life I Live" is an early 1960’s song from a Dutch garagerock band called Q65. They are from Den Haag, the place I live now. It’s a song that has given me a lot of self-esteem over the years, that I owe nobody anything, welll, in a way, hope you get what I mean. That other band above "Hallo Venray" (did anyone listen already? What do you think? ) is also from Den Haag, by the way.
Now that I’m getting into this subject anyway, there is another song that is on my list. It’s from a Frisian band called Reboelje (when 1 of the singers left a few years ago, they renamed themselves to Swee). There is an ugly version of their song "Dream Hynder" (Dream Horse) on YouTube, but the studio version is way better. Goose bumps also. Try it anyway, if you like. It’s about a guy that wants to follow his dream horse everywhere it goes, away from the earthly sorrows. But nobody will understand that I guess, as it’s sung in the Frisian language, hehehe!

As I can probably only have 3 songs to be played on my funeral, I always had the idea of giving the people that attend my funeral a cd with my most favourite songs, like 10 or 15 of them. I’ll come back with other songs that are going to be on that cd (16 Horsepower, Earth And Fire (NOT to be mistaken with Earth, Wind And Fire! ) and others). I’m starting to like this topic!

ArthurSpectatorThis is the translated text of Swee – Dream Hynder.
Carry me over the borders
The borders of life
Take me where it is smooth
Take me where it is light
Take me to a place where it is good and honest
Dream horse, fly horse, fly
Where you go
I want to go alsoThe ground I’m standing on is black and ugly
And around me the day grabs me tight
The wall around our house is high, so high
I don’t see the daylight, so high
I don’t hear people, so high
I don’t see the world
Where people
Have fun, and laugh out loud
Making up their villages, having festivals
Clap their hands, tell jokes
Drink, dance, talk about everything
And about nothingBut me, me with my angry heart
I can not, I can not
I can not do itThrough the purple foam I feel death
But life is still so big
And fills my square with pure red
Lights still bumps my ears
All the time, all the time again
My life, my good life
So unreachable far away
It burns like a fire in meDream horse, fly horse, fly
Carry me over the borders
Where you go
I want to go also -

Return To ComfortSpectatorGo Rest High on That Mountain–Vince Gill
I know your life
on earth was troubled
and only you could know the pain.
You weren’t afraid to face the devil,
you were no stranger to the rain.Go rest high on that mountain
son, your work on earth is done.
Go to heaven a-shoutin’
love for the Father and the Son.Oh,how we cried the day you left us
we gathered round your grave to grieve.
I wish i could see the angels faces
when they hear your sweet voice sing.Go rest high on that mountain
son, your work on earth is done.
Go to heaven a-shoutin’
love for the Father and the Son. -

ArthurSpectatorStart calling me names, but this song is going to be on that cd also. It was the first song in my early youth that actually made me cry. And I still love this song, a while back I bought the original 7\" of it…

True!
When I went to Mexico, we saw a video on our way to Chichen Itza about "Day of the Dead" "Dia de los Muertos" and I was shocked to know that there are people that spend the night in the cemetery, next to graves with cakes and stuff like that!
"Mexicans visit cemeteries, decorate the graves and spend time there – in the presence of their deceased friends and family members. They also make elaborately decorated altars (sometimes called ofrendas) in their homes to welcome the spirits."
"The spirits are greeted with offerings of food and things that the person enjoyed in life. These are laid out on a Day of the Dead altar in the family home. It is believed that the spirits consume the essence and the aroma of the foods that are offered. When the spirits depart, the living consume the food and share it with their family, friends and neighbors."
