about a sealed japanese promo cd of siamese dream from 1993 made me have a look at my copies. and i found out that my non-promo copy looks exactly the same as my promo copy, except for the sticker on the back, and the \"sample not for sale\" on the cd.
the commercial copy on spfreaks.com looks different! and it has a different matrix code that includes ifpi codes:
      http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … LS&item=47
      promo copy: http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … S&item=264

my conclusion: i need to make scans from my non-promo copy and submit them to spfreaks.com.
and, the non-promo copy that’s already up on spfreaks.com is not an original ’93 pressing. i assume it was pressed in ’94 or ’95, because it still has the ’93 and ’95 dates on the back.

do these dates indicate when the cd is released and until when the price is fixed? i believe they have this kind of law there, that cds have to be sold at a certain price for a certain amount of time.

also, does anyone know what the obi says? there’s a lot of text in that purple part that isn’t repeated on the all white obi of the later pressing.

I’m sure you are right here, since IFPI established the cd codes in 1994 somewhere.

\"In 1994, in an effort to combat piracy, the IFPI and the compact disc manufacturing industry introduced Source Identification (SID) codes, which are markings on CD parts that identify the manufacturers, equipment, and master discs that were used to create each disc.\"*

I’m not sure about the ’93 and ’95 dates, but it looks like a 2 year timeframe for a fixed price, indeed. And we do have to correct the date on the non-promo copy. But will it be 1994 or 1995? Hmm… But thanks for the research again, Bram!

What I found on the IFPI codes of the non-promo cd:

      IFPI L153 = Toshiba-EMI Ltd. Japan
IFPI 28R4 = also used on several Pink Floyd cds released in 2001 in Japan (Animals, released June 16, 2001 & A Collection Of Great Dance Songs, released May 25, 2001 & a few more), but also on a System F cd released in 2000.

Could this indicate this non-promo version of Siamese Dream was released in 2000 or 2001 too?

my assumption that the release date would be somewhere in between the two dates mentioned is false.

      this is a 2007 reissue of mcis: http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … &item=2303
but it still has the ’95 and ’97 dates from the original release mentioned.
so yes, that siamese dream repressing could be from any year.

allmusic.com claims there’s a ’99 release of siamese dream in japan. they don’t mention the ’93 release.
it’s not clear where they get their information, or if it can be trusted. maybe it’s a typo.

the ’95 date on the front is definitely a two year window, where after this date, the price can go higher or lower, legally. until that time, the price is fixed.

japan also has a rental policy on CDs that falls in line with these dates as well. i’m currently doing a research project for SPfreaks on obis right now.

one more thing, my stepsister is japanese and i’ve contacted her a month ago with the greatest hits promo CD (to start with) and asked her to translate EVERYTHING into english, including the obi, jewel case, text on the CD spine, and even the 3 page japanese text insert. she is a busy woman with a family, but she said by the end of the month, she may have something for me.

so i can ask her to make this the next release to translate for us. 8)

how is that a \"priced-down reissue\" when it costs more? makes no cents
