ArthurSpectatorOK, OK, fairly late this year, I know… my excuses!
But it was the hardest task so far, believe me! But within 1 or 2 weeks I will release a new set of very listenable MP3s here in this topic, for our third Live Compilation, to honor the band we all love: Smashing Pumpkins. Prepare for acoustic versions of songs that you would never ever believe that they were done acoustically (X.Y.U. for example? anybody? ), or songs with extra motherfucking! rants, metal versions of lovely ballad songs, blues and ska versions of old rarities, extended live versions of radio hits, well, whatever, just wait what I will throw in. It might or might not contain everything I mentioned here before. I still have to choose from a longlist of almost 300 MP3 songs, in total 2,41 GB of Pumpkins beauties, rendered by the Pumpkins themselves. Keep your eyes peeled to this topic here, guys!

SvenSpectatorjust to make a statement in proving BC’s remarks towards the writing of ‘Today’ , as being written, because the record company wanted a hit-single…!, WRONG… > you might want to consider the inclusion of the very first known recording of ‘Today’… way back from 92 that is; way before there was ever any mention of the label meddling in hit-single or not-affairs…
the infamous ‘I Am One’ (loud/fast/metal-version) can’t be overlooked, right???
same goes for the UTTERLY BRILLIANT early 1996 version of ‘Rocket’!!!…. awww, that’s so stunning…
speaking of stunning: how about: ‘By Starlight’ from 1997 GM Place, Vancouver???!!!

ArthurSpectator@Sven: I’ll try to find that Today version you mentioned (or can you send it to me, maybe?), but for the moment I have an acoustic version (with cello!!!) from 1993 on top of the list. Not to be missed also I think. I Am One metal version was already included in a previous SPfreaks release, so… And I have found a cool Pissant rant version, also an I Of The Mourning with rant, so I think that will be nice to include also. Furthermore, I have 2 By Starlight versions at the moment, 1 early version from February 1995, and a slower version from UK 1997. I’ll compare it with the GM Place version, OK?
@some pumpkins: I have several versions of Mayonaise on my list (what date is yours? I downloaded it from there, but it doesn’t provide that info…), and also a cello version of Starla from 1993. That acoustic version of Starla from London 1993 is cool also, indeed… I have put it on my longlist as we speak!
General note, I have set the deadline for Saturday, November 28 for the upload including new artwork!

> I Am One: OK.

SvenSpectatorbtw:
how we came unto this recording is quite an adventure in and of itself…
somewhere back in 96 or 97 i stumbled upon a site from a British guy. he listed a lot of live recordings by quite an array of different acts. loads of dates were off therein.
however: he did list the 93 Vredenburg, Utrecht, NL show, one in London (Town and Country Club I think it was) and the Kleine Markthalle show.
he didn’t trade. he did sell though. this was ‘not-done’ per se in trading cycles, but somehow i thought: what the heck? and went along and bought the discs and the video tape. these turned to be correctly labelled. these were until then not circulated or found recordings. especially the show from Kleine Markthalle proved to be a gem due to the first known performance of Today. the performance from Utrecht is pretty cool too.
it was somewhat a shot in the dark to buy these recordings, running the risk of these being mislabelled and all, but it turned out great. some copies were made quite a bit later and then the recordings spread further. i haven’t seen the video up anywhere though.
i can’t remember correctly, but i think the guy told me he used to work for bands or had a friend or friends or collegues who did and that was how he got a hold of these recordings.
it was just pure chance i stumbled unto his site and found these…and:
here is a cool review, in German:http://www.rigmarole.de/smashingpumpkins/reviews/review1992-08-31.htmlEDIT!!! > i just found the cd!!!:)
damn: this Today is just so AWESOME!!! the recording might be below par, the performance of this song, even back then; it’s just amazing… if you haven’t heard this before, you’re in for a treat: hearing the first known performance of Today, THE HIT SINGLE, just blows my mind, even now, again….
plus: like i said… all of BCs stories of how he came home from the Gish tours and lived in a crappy place and the label demanding a hit and him writing this at his lowest of lows… hmmm… doesn’t quite add up, does it, dude??? -

not only because of the sound quality, but also because even in Silverfuck, then and there, around those times, less is more… yep… -

For 3 reasons I picked the other one.-Lots of people heard about the 40 minutes Silverfuck jam, but not all had the chance to listen to it.
-On this date the recording quality is way better.
-Suprise, surprise… this one lasts just as long (if not longer?) as the Pensacola version. You guys are going to love it! -

Edit 2009-11-28
OK guys, start downloading, and grab that iPod! 596.18 MB of Pumpkins renditions are here for your listening pleasure:
–
–By the way, the previous 2 SPfreaks’ Live Compilations can still be found here, as kindly provided by mr.benway in a post further down this thead. Many many thanks, mr.benway!
–
–Notes on this release. (also included in the artwork)
Itâs starting to become a tradition, creating these Smashing Pumpkins Live Compilations⦠And with pleasure this third one was made, let me tell you. I consider this renditions release as the best so far (and the other 2 were already hard to top!), with a stunning amount of 42 Smashing Pumpkins live tracks that highlight every aspect of Pumpkins playing live. At first I mixed the (semi-)acoustic tracks with the more rocking electric tracks, but that didnât really create a good listening atmosphere, to my humble opinion. So for that reason, I split up the release in 2 parts. But how did I decide about every one of the 42 tracks? Let me explain about a few of them.
Part I, track 1 is a joke, obviously. The irony of the title âIâll Never Changeâ just asked for being the starter of this release⦠This rather unknown Smashing Pumpkins song was taken from Mashed Potatoes. Obscured, Snail and Suffer from that London Hotel room session couldnât be missed when we talk about acoustic renditions of Gish era songs. And when it is hard to decide which one should be added, you just throw them all in, right?
Cherub Rock and the other 2 titles from the 1993-12-12 gig were chosen for the integration of a cello in the sound. It works quite well, and I hope you guys listening to it, think the same. Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness was chosen for itâs rarity, I think not many fans know about the existence of unaired 1995 MTV footage that is out there. It was taken from the David Mead Compilation digital-only boot that can be found sometimes on torrent sites.
Also I wanted to pick some Smashing Pumpkins tracks that were done live with other artists (that can be considered a rendition also, right?), thatâs why Eye, Blissed And Gone and Disarm are on the list for Part I. All in all, Part I gives a great overview of the acoustic brilliance that the Smashing Pumpkins achieve playing live. Again, just my humble opinion. But I hope you guys have a great listening experience, and appreciate my choices again so far!
Part II is focused on the electric songs, and I didnât give a shit throwing in some same titles when I thought it would be appropriate for renditionsâ reasons. Thatâs why you will find X.Y.U., Disarm, Starla, Today and Silverfuck in 2 redone versions. I wonder who will survive the famous 40 minutes version of that last track⦠Oh, talking about Today, the electric version is maybe not the best recording quality, but do you notice how old that song actually is? And what about the instrumental middle part? Awesome!
Furthermore, Sun in an even longer early live version than on the Light Into Dark release, many Adore era songs since I had the idea that this era was not highlighted enough on the previous 2 Live Compilations, and may I point you already to the angry grunting metal version of Ava Adore? Man, I love that version, itâs perfect! I Am One from the 1994-08-28 gig was chosen for the very different rant (even little parts of an early Zero can be heard, and Billy Corgan was definitely not that much into God and cornflakes as he turned out to be later in his career), and now I want to put a little spotlight on Pissant.
Pissant was released on the Siamese Dream album in Japan only, on the Cherub Rock single and on the b-sides album Pisces Iscariot too. Meaning, the song Pissant is not that well-known, and it wasnât played live many times either. Only the few visitors to a handful of 2 gigs had the chance and the pleasure to get to know this song in a live rendition. This 1993-10-05 recording of Pissant shows the Pumpkins weirdness during the introduction of Jimmy during the song, and the outtro that I just had to add⦠And with the blues-rock version of Window Paine directly following it, damn, this is good!
Final thingy I want to explain, is the song X.Y.U., why I put it twice on this release. The almost acoustic version is already very rare, and good too, but when the Smashing Pumpkins played as âThe Beatlesâ as opening act for Kiss in the Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, on 1998-10-31, they decided to redo X.Y.U. almost completely. Be prepared for an almost new song! It is one of my favorite Smashing Pumpkins live tracks of all times. The quality is quite decent, since it comes from the âFriends And Enemies Of Modern Music (60m cassette)â. Info found online about this famous demo/boot cassette:
From a 60m cassette given by BC to an online fan in April 2000, with instructions to \"circulate these\". The compilation was originally to be a 90m tape, but it got screwed up, so he dug up the Gravity demos instead, and made this 60m tape the next day. Two tracks were cut, on the end of each side… \"Well, tough shit.\"
Iâm sure this Renditions Live Compilation is no âtough shitâ but âextremely enjoyable shitâ. Have fun!
Arthur
P.S. the covers mixed in Cash Car Star are Easy Livin’ – Uriah Heep, Foreplay – Boston, For What It’s Worth – Buffalo Springfield and an instrumental tease from Wasted Years – Iron Maiden.

I knew/hoped you would like it, Sven. I’m not looking for trouble with the Advisory Board, you know…But yeah, seriously, these words from my liner notes are VERY true to me, I seriously think this is an awesome set of Pumpkins live material, a really great listen. I enjoy it every day in the car! Hope you guys like it too!
"Itâs starting to become a tradition, creating these Smashing Pumpkins Live Compilations⦠And with pleasure this third one was made, let me tell you. I consider this renditions release as the best so far (and the other 2 were already hard to top!), with a stunning amount of 42 Smashing Pumpkins live tracks that highlight every aspect of Pumpkins playing live."

Is it working already? Did you unzip the file again? Or maybe you should download the file again and unzip it again…Otherwise I can upload the single file again also, if you like.
