With mixed feelings I put them in the official cd section, as they are internet downloads, burned on cd-r. Radio stations don’t provide cds anymore, and djs have to download their shows, and burn them for keeping them in stock. The artwork is provided on the websites of Westwood One, and can be used to put on the cd-r. I bought these 2 a while ago from a US dj, that turned out to be not that trustworthy when it came to shipping more items and returning money. He disappeared many times from eBay, screaming it was not his fault. Yeah right. Cool As Ice Cream knows the guy also I guess. Anyway, judge yourself, but I think it are real shows anyway from a genuine source, not being the dj, but the radio networks.

I got that Live Earth radio promo from that guy. I’m certain it’s a fake, and I returned it, but I still haven’t seen my money back, even though the seller promised me many times he would get around to it…

Anyway, that one was definitely fake: just listen to it. No way would they send out such a crappy audio to radio stations. It sounds absolutely worthless. Someone probably recorded it from one of those tiny online streamed videos, with the volume too low.

I would never ever buy from that seller again.

You could have the same discussion, but you’d be comparing apples to oranges. The stamps and stickers on the promo vinyls of recent are not generic. Meaning, not just anyone slapped them on there. Obviously they COULD, but they didn’t.

The generic stamps appear all over the place and are therefore, at a minimum, questionable.

I agree on both notes. Only Australian cds of the Smashing Pumpkins contain the D.A.T.A. logo and matrix (mostly around 1998, if I’m right). I googled a bit around, and here is a little history on D.A.T.A. I found on the Pink Floyd Australian Compact Disc Discography website:

1986 – In July 1985, EMI Music began conversion of its videodisc manufacturing facilities in Australia to the manufacture of compact discs. CD production began in early 1986 by EMI Music Group Australasia, a subsidiary of EMI Music.

1992 – In 1992, EMI Music Australia formed Digital Audio Technologies Australia (D.A.T.A.), a joint venture with Warner Music Australia. A D.A.T.A. compact disc manufacturing plant was established in Sydney, Australia.

2004 – In late 2004, EMI Music Australia sold Digital Audio Technologies Australia (D.A.T.A.), to Summit Technology Australia Pty Ltd, effective December 31, 2004. Summit began manufacturing EMI CDs for Australia.[/quote:1mfcae7i]

So, I will change the country of this Master to Australia later today. Then, talking about acetates… I found an interesting definition of an Acetate on an Iron Maiden collectors website:

Before the advent of using the Compact Disc to record/ playback in the studio vinyl acetates where used by the band and engineers to listen to what had been put down. Also known as Reference discs, the draw back for these vinyl acetates was –

a. poor quality playback audio
b. short life span – the vinyl acetate would actually begin to break up and all audio would be lost after a period of time.

So in the recording studio the CDR (Compact Disc Recordable) replaced the vinyl acetate and has become to be known as a Studio CDR or CDR Acetate. Basically it is just the album or parts of the album recorded onto CDR, sometimes as un-mastered demos and with studio sleeve notes penned by the engineer or producer. These particular recordings are not promos! As they are not released for promotional purposes. They are the sole property of the recording studio and very rarely make it into the hands of the collector. They can also command extraordinarily high prices.[/quote:1mfcae7i]

On SPfreaks.com we use acetate in 3 ways so far, as Type of release.

-Acetate (First Test Pressing) => 31 cds
-Acetate (Master) => 1 cd
-Acetate (Used As Promo) => 59 cds

Next to that we have the "Item (Promo)", which also contains the Radio cds… Which I wanted to separate also, Type of release-wise. All in all, a bit messy, and the Type of release field is not properly used here and there also. I would like to suggest the following changes to be implemented:

-Commercial Promo => used to be "Item (Promo)", to be used for the common promos with full artwork
-First Test Pressing => used to be "Acetate (First Test Pressing)", to be used also for Inhouse Studio Reference discs
-Inhouse Promo => used to be "Acetate (Used As Promo)", to be used for the more uncommon CDR Acetate/b&w promos (but the distinction is not always very clear here, as they can be commercial promos also…)
-Radio Show => to be created new, to be used with the existing Format "Media For Radio Broadcast"
-Studio Master => used to be "Acetate (Master)"

Is this a way to go? Any comments? Shoot!

In Greece, they never use a barcode. They etch/engrave the information on the item. They do that since ancient times…

Maybe it’s worthwhile to mention that this AU Today cassette is almost identical to the UK Today cassette, but the AU Today cassette lacks the UK pressing info left and right from the barcode on the back.

For the rest we can’t say much, as the UK Today cassette on our website is sealed, so we don’t know how the actual UK Today cassette looks like, if it has any differences from the AU Today cassette.

Yeah, that’s how I figured out it must be that track, the track length matches perfectly. But the other acoustic Mayonaise, from Still Becoming Apart, was also officially released, on Rarities And B-sides.

I’m impressed with the quality of that EP. For the price, I assumed it was at least made in China – but it says made in the US on their site. The packaging seems good quality – EP1 was kinda crappy. I wouldn’t mind having all the EP1 songs on vinyl though – only have the two songs from that on vinyl and I don’t play it on my record player.

Where, did I miss it maybe? I based it on the code ISRC CN-A01-97-338-00/A.J6, which is a Chinese code (CN = China).

It says duplicated 8/4/95 on the j-card, but the 8 is very blur indeed. On the cassette itself it says 7/25/1995, so I presume that is the right date for the mixes/intended tracklisting. The Billy test pressing acetate cds are dated end of August 1995, so this cassette is VERY early already. No?

That’s my tape! I sent it to Rhinowing to upload to Archive.com

If I recall correctly, the only defference I heard from the actual Mellon Collie CD, was that the intro static to Bodies was longer on the tape than the CD version.

This code is present on the cd (hardly readable, just like all the rest) and on the spine of the sleeve. Just like the US version. (The EU version sleeve doesn’t have a white spine with text.)

This morning I was invited to play a minor role in a Dutch movie (I’m 1 of the running people during a shopping mall shoot out, the movie is called \"Raw\" and will be hitting the Dutch cinemas in April 2012, hopefully) and I met a lady there that will try to help me publish the story. I played it many times now already, it’s a bunch of instrumentals that I never heard before. I do have to check it to the tunes that appeared on the official Stigmata soundtrack, but the titles on this cd suggest this is a set of studio try-outs of Billy Corgan for the movie. Maybe from these tunes (with working titles) the tunes for the movie soundtrack cd evolved?

as for the Stigmata cd.
i’ve thought about this and this is most likely the actual music in the film for the storyboard/scenes.
for the soundtrack release some of these were reworked to work as an album.
just check the cd with the dvd of the movie to hear the differences… i.e. fades, mastering levels, compression…
this one might be an actual cd connecting the scenes to the soundtrack music.
i’d say this is not per se an acetate but a disc to work with for the editors of the movie, making the cut.
the actual music will not have been cd sourced, rather full hi-def digital pro-tools ADAT i guess…

unlike the for example Masterdisk copy of Untitled this one seems to be a copy of the original one.
i.e.: not one that was the one Howie and co sent out to be checked and approved for reference by the band/producer/management…
it’s just not up to standards for a first grade Masterdisk effort.
then again: it’s very well possible someone along the line at Virgin or wherever made a copy and put the sleeve on a copier and this is that copy…

Identify is missing for a simple reason.

the soundtrack was ready and there had to be a lead single.
imbruglia had to sing this, was decided.
i think she was on tour then and bc forwarded several versions (in different pitch) to her to record the vocals over.
this song didn’t get finished until the very last moment before the movie was premiered and the soundtrack got released.

11/28 -> according to BC finished the final recording and mix of Untitled, hence: the Ashley copy

Untitled was recorded in the week before the penultimed at UC and final performance at Metro.
That I know for sure.
It just can not be these 3 cdrs were mailed out earlier than 11/29.

""Untitled" was recorded in Chicago in late November by leader Billy Corgan and the remaining original members of the group, guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. Touring bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur, who replaced original bassist D’Arcy Wretzky, did not play on the song.
The swaying acoustic rock track debuted November 29 on Chicago alternative station Q101 (WKQX-FM) and later streamed on the station’s site exclusively for a month. Now more than 50 stations have played the melancholy swan song – which was not commercially available at the time – according to a spokesperson for the band.
Dave Richards, program director of Q101, said Corgan called him a few days before the Pumpkins’ November 29 show at Chicago’s United Center to discuss plans for a simulcast of that show.

The NOV on the date stamp should have been DEC.

The track was finished on 11/28 if i recall correctly, so this is very well possible.

Quite so. Not that many people would have been given access to this very song before the premiere.
Their were also copyright issues to be solved, so a date stamped copy sent to the record label would be a good idea to secure some rights in the recording.

I do not recall a Virgin rep or somebody by the name of Ashley in the band’s company/crew at that moment in time.

Ashley Newton would be a perfect match for somebody to get a CDR of this song on the day of completion.
Imagine the track arriving at Virgin and someone making this for her… that’s very well possible.

Now the question is: is it an MP3 source or not?
Because: the track was done in Chicago, BC was in Chicago, Virgin is in LA right?
You would not get a finished master to Virgin in time.

I would venture a guess that Zwan releases got the same treatment as Zeitgeist, because they were both promoted by big brother, Warner. You could look up Zeitgeist countries to get an idea of what \"might\" be out there.

Possibly a CO version, but I’ve only seen the SD vinyl and Adore CD pressed there, but not through Warner Bros.

And I have confirmed a CL Zeitgeist pressing, however, it’s proving difficult to obtain but I’m still trying..

yes, people, please have a look at the IFPI codes on your EU copy. i’m fairly certain it says IFPI LK57, but it would be good to have a second opinion on this. and the second IFPI code i can’t read completely. it says IFPI UU00x. the last character seems to be messed up on my copy, so i can’t read it. it would be cool if someone could check their copy and see what it says.

as far as i know, yes. unless it is indie, then well, whatever. but all major labels release their albums on tuesday. remember 07/07/07? there is a flag out there that states that is when the album was released, but it turns out to be wrong.

one press kit with a different release date doesn’t prove anything. it’s not enough to adjust the release date on all those releases in the spfreaks collection, in my opinion. i mean, it could be correct – i don’t know – but i’m not immediately convinced.

i think the problem here is that we no longer know what the sources are for the \"original\" release date of the 28th. if we had all the sources in front of us, it would probably be easier to decide what the actual release date was.

i’m not sure if the tuesday thing was already used back in ’91. i wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t.

just had a listen. track-listing insert is definitely wrong. everything is as it were, although, where they cut track 1 and 2 is shitty because you hear the last two notes of track 1 when track 2 starts up.

i agree.

the way i see it: the box is unofficial, and i’d even consider it a separate "release". it can actually be bought separately.
it’s just that whoever sells these (probably different people who bought a couple of these boxes), fills them up with any combination of official releases (any country, etc.) they can get their hands on today. because of this, the link between the box and the content is rather random. i personally wouldn’t combine the content and the box into one spfreaks.com entry. maybe just mention that it’s an unofficial release, that often comes filled up with officially released cds.

similar situation: that wooden siamese dream box is an unnoficial release, even though it doesn contain the officially released cd and booklet. (here too, different versions of the siamese dream cd and booklet have been found inside the wooden box. same thing happened: the company that produced the box, didn’t fill them up. they just sold the empty boxes to whoever thought they could make a profit out of them.)

but i’m sure thought has been given to this issue (official or unofficial), and that there’s a good reason/rule why these two releases are listed as "official".
i’d put them under "unofficial", to avoid all confusion. but that’s also just my two cents.

it’s a bootleg. i have it but haven’t yet opened it because i’ve heard the shows quite recently.

the box is sturdy. not the coolest of art but also not offensive on the eyes.
i would guess that it’s sourced from lossless files – if it is and you listen to cds – then it could be worth owning.
