Annoying issue with page 103/104 of the original thread not working well. As Cool As Ice Cream suggests, we start all over/continue with a new thread and close the other one.

How freaky can you be… I bought a set of 4 US import singles, manufactured in the UK for 12 dollar something including shipment. Today, Peel Sessions, I Am One & Disarm. Some are not even on this site yet. :P

    • #45256

i’m still looking for some of those singles, but then made in the US. i find them hard to find.

I’ve been collecting record awards for the past 10 years. Ive had the Mellon Collie for almost that long and I got the Machina one within the past two years. In the past month I was able to score two Siamese Dream awards and a Pisces award. The collection is shaping up nicely. :)

dunno. there must be a difference, i think. maybe just a tad louder or something?

on the other hand, my ears are so bad that i’m certain that i wouldn’t hear a difference myself, even if it was obvious.

    • #45296

actually, i might be wrong. your cd also says \"eq’d for cd\".

your cd says \"pre-master cd\", \"security services – listening only\", and \"cd manufacturing and production use – handle with care\".
the other one says \"cd reference\", and \"promo use only – not for resale – not for manufacturing\".

clearly the two cds have different purposes. one is meant for the manufacturing process, the other one is meant to be handed out as a promo.
is the content different? i think so. but i’m not sure.
is the \"pre-master\" actually a pre-master? or would \"not-finished master\" be more appropriate?

EDIT: your cd also says \"digital mastering by keith blake at …\"
and underneath it says \"GE KB …\": i think the KB refers to keith blake. and my guess would be that this version has already been mastered by KB.
your cd also says \"from various sources\". the other cd says \"from 1630 source\". so that one has been copied from another cd.
either way, your cd is way rarer than the promotional cd. yours might be unique.

like you say, the mastering probably came from different sources. something tells me WB probably didn’t master these tracks, rather virgin, and they just sent them over to WB for inclusion on the soundtrack. i checked everything, and, to my ears, the soundtrack sounds verbatim as all known commercial versions. perhaps someone at WB DID tweak these songs a tiny bit, i don’t know exactly how it all works. when i saw KB, i instantly thought kerry brown, haha.

i guess my point/thought is this: all artists on this soundtrack appear courtesy of other record labels. unless, of course, they already appear on WB. to me, this suggests the respective record companies sent over mastered versions of what they wanted to contribute. but, someone needs to do a final mastering of the WB product (enter KB and GE). they don’t want to create a shitty soundtrack with errors. perhaps it was just a quick QC and nothing was changed. but if they found a major flaw, they could have figured it out and requested another "master" be sent over from whoever records before adding it to a soundtrack that they wanted to sound at its absolute best.

what i think happened is this:

all bands deliver their respective materials. there are mixed and EQ-d and my guess is also pre-mastered.
these are then compiled and need a compilation mastering to make sure the overall levels are in check.

a pre-master for the compilation is most likely a cd featuring all tracks in running order and with the final mastering, which is then used to manufacture the final masters for production from. this would be in line with the fact that it has been mastered by KB. therefore i’d conclude it was not like a pre-FM, before KB did the (digital) mastering, but that the pre-master denotes the fact that this cd/this master-mix was used to create the production master, but was not itself the production-master.

a reference cd is normally made from the production-master to check before the production starts in full swing. if that one is approved, it can of course (as there will be no changes after that point) be used as a promotional/reference/in-house cd as it is bound to be identical to the finished product which will hit the stores. of course there will be promotional releases of the commercial product in due time (and especially for review and (radio)promotion), but when you want to bridge the period between the start of manufacturing the cds and the moment the commercial product press run items are ready, one can use the reference cd.

i believe i saw this on ebay.
isn’t this just a US promo though, with a small sticker mentioning that it was imported, by emi canada, or whoever?

i remember that the ebay description said "made in canada" and "virgin records canada", but when you looked at the pictures, it was clear that this wasn’t the case.

no. that’s just a promotional flag for the album. it was released way before. i remember seeing one on the day of the paris 2007 show, which was in may.
originally, the release date was supposed to be 7-7-7. i guess for symbolic reasons. but then, when the release date came closer, it changed to a couple of days later. i guess for practical reasons.

I was trying the Judas 0 Masterdisk for a while (and was highest bidder for a while), but after 70 pound I stopped. It went for 100 something I noticed. I found that too much.

Last year I bought the Gish Gold disc for around 20 dollar (less than 5% of the latest auction). I was lucky because the header of the auction description didn’t say anything about gold disc. I checked the pics, however, and it turned out it was the gold disc. Again, I was very lucky. :)

The alternate box is (what I now know is) the prototype box. I swear that I saw it in an ad for TAFH when it first came out in ’96; I remember going to Best Buy to buy it and being disappointed that the box wasn’t the one with the little SP symbols on it. I’m not sure if I ever posted on Blamo about it. I was shocked to see that box on here… it confirmed that I haven’t been crazy for the past 15 years and it really does exist! Next time I get in the attic I will check and see if I saved a copy of the ad with the rest of my SP clippings.

billy does most of the talking. james says a little something here and there. not sure (yet) if d’arcy or jimmy are there. (still listening.)

i did some quick googling, but couldn’t find any references to this press conference.

Here’s Tristessa in the frame – it came as a kit (!) and the pre-cut mat is a little bit smaller than the record and sleeve… so I’m going to take it to a craft store to get the mat cut, or put one of my Auf Der Maur records in this frame and get frame for Tristessa from a different (and more expensive) manufacturer with an assembled frame and sleeve for the record.

Cool! And good to see some MadM love.

Today I received a few posters I ordered at the official SP Ebay store. I was surprised to learn that they send me four instead of the three posters I paid for (I got a damaged Arising poster for free). Also it didn’t contain the Machina poster from Munich I picked, but one from Stockholm. Anyway, apart from the sky-high customs duties I had to pay, I’m quite happy with them.

no, i checked the regular album promo, and it doesn’t contain the alternate mixes.

we should indeed review our story behind the cd-rs. they’re not "test pressings" or "masters" for the regular cds. at least not in this case.
clearly the cd-r was made way before the other promotional cd. maybe they needed a handful of promotional cd-rs before they were able to press the normal promo cd, and even before they were able to acquire the finished master? (was it even finished at that time?)
possible reasons: they’re meant for people at the record company, they were meant for "listening parties" (did these exist back in 2000?), or any other theory that involves earliness and small quantity.

    • #45494

      i’ll try to explain:
the sacred and profane: extra drum loops at the beginning. (normally these only appear at the end of the track.)
age of innocence: this extra noise in the background, during all of the song, if i’m not mistaken.

i should investigate this further, but i’m not even sure if all "alternate promo mixes" are the same. it hasn’t been confirmed that there isn’t any variation between the different sources.

at that time, nobody knew that this cd had the alternate mixes. first you need to get the cd, then you need to listen.

sacred and profane a simple four bar drum loop intro not present on final version and age of innocence has this fuzz that fades out right before the bridge around 2:30 or so. never noticed before.

now i’ll have a listen to 6 promos to see if they have it as well.

after some quick research, there are two more confirmed pressings that have the alternate mixes:

      http://www.spfreaks.com/?page=COLLDETAILS&item=1088

      http://www.spfreaks.com/?page=COLLDETAILS&item=2602

      the first is very straightforward.

the second one, however, as it is listed on spfreaks, looks to be german, and not US. i could be wrong, but i’ve only seen the green virgin logo on two other CDs before and they are both german and also machina-era.

my copy is just a blank cd-r, but it has the same insert and it is also sitting at an angle like the one on the site. i believe my copy to be a US pressing.

it’s really no surprise these tracks leaked a long time ago!

    • #45508

ok, i checked and listened and stuff.

the ones that are now listed as having the alternate mixes indeed have the alternate mixes: http://www.spfreaks.com/?page=COLLTRACK&track=10461
(i can’t verify this one, but manilla just did: http://www.spfreaks.com/?page=COLLDETAILS&item=1088)

i couldn’t find any other cd with the alternate mixes, except one: that mysterious \"premaster\" cd-r. i believe this is the version that first leaked. no idea where it came from. the fact that bits are missing from some (or all?) the tracks makes it even weirder, in my opinion.

      [/quote:20chh9ju]
anyway, i compared all alternate mixes over those different releases, including that \"premaster cd-r\", and they all sound the same.

manilla, you’re right: the alternate mix for the sacred and profane has that drum loop intro. another difference is that a very similar drum loop is in the outro of the officially released song, but it’s not there in the alternate (early) mix.
and another easy way to hear the difference between the two age of innocence mixes is to listen to the very end.

now the weirdest thing is that i found these two flac files saved under \"machina promo tracks\". i must have downloaded them online somewhere a long time ago (from some messageboard? the hub? – they may not always have been flac files; i may have converted them from .wav or .shn), but they weren’t part of a whole album download. it was just those two alternate mixes. now age of innocence is all normal, and has the same length as that \"premaster\" cd-r, so it might come from there. but the sacred and profane both has the drum loop intro and the drum loop outro! none of the releases i checked have this.
so there has to be another source out there, that has both. a cd-r we haven’t found yet? an other source? or would it be possible that someone constructed this track, by combining the alternate mix with the officially released version? no idea.

      that is all for now.

Freakin’ awesome research guys, wow. Hats off to you both! 8)

    • #45510

i should also add that on all releases, with exception of that \"premaster\" cd-r, the track lengths are the same. so i think it is very likely that all releases (except that \"premaster\" cd-r) share the same source.

i assume the EU versions of this cd-r were copied from a copy of a US version cd-r. and maybe the french one got copied from a UK one later on. possibly. (i don’t really know if delabel’s mainly connected to london, or directly to america.) but in the end they all come from the same \"original source\", which must be what the band handed to the record company at the end of 1999.

i guess i should also upload that freak version of \"the sacred and profane\" that has both the drum loop intro and outro. it would be interesting to find out where that track came from.

Finally! I won a 2CD set on eBay that was in my top 10 of most sought after SP items. 8)

I already own the BBC In Concert 651 with a recording of the August 1995 Reading Festival performance of Smashing Pumpkins, but that 1CD release does not contain all songs played @Reading 1995 by Smashing Pumpkins. So I have been looking for one of the Westwood One radio promos with this festival performance of SP, and there are only four of them: #96-41 (almost complete), #97-15 (incomplete), #97-43 (incomplete) and #98-47 (complete).

In fact none of them are complete, since Fucky You (An Ode To No One) was never recorded/broadcast by BBC nor Westwood One. Anyway, #98-47 is supposed to contain the full Reading concert, as I found out years ago by an eBay auction of this 2CD set that I did not win. It is also supposed to contain Soma on the end of the radio show, not only my most favourite Smashing Pumpkins song, but it might also be a little discovery since SPLRA.org does not mention that it was played @Reading 1995, let alone that it is ‘out there’…

(damn myself: i remember clearly how it looked and all, might have saved the images then, but i did that on a work computer (as I haven’t had a computer until pretty much 2000+)… anyway… all my TSP-files I then copied onto ZIP-discs, gave those to Jeroen, he then transferred the files to CDRs for me and maybe I did put those back onto an old computer I no longer use (but still have in the attic)… I never threw any TSP-related stuff away, so these CDRs should be somewhere, just like the audio for the Still Life / TSP gig (very first Pumpkins show) where I had some snippets of (and one or two complete songs) from the Still Life set where BC filled in if I’m not totally mistaken… so many years ago… might need to bring my archive(s) back in working order I guess… :) …)[/quote:3iatizjo]

i remember that going for sale on eBay when i was in college, so probably around 98-2000, somewhere in there. it went for $700ish. as i recall, the vinyl was yellow, but perhaps that was just the sleeve it came in. i think it was probably mike potentials copy. i didn’t bid, had no money then. oh well.

Hi there, I recently got The Celestials US promo CD however when I went to rip the CD it was not an edited version but the same one that is on Oceania. The CD looks real enough and came from someone with over 10 years and 100% feedback on ebay so can someone else here who has this CD confirm that I have been ripped off.

surely releasing a record player would be a definite commercial suicide for the pumpkins. can’t you just imagine the disaster that would be, hypothetically? it’s a stupid idea to begin with, but sp3 would take that to the next level. first of all the whole project would be delayed a couple of times. (this is just classic release strategy now. at this point, i’d ask my money back if there wasn’t a delay.) then topspin would fuck up. and then half of the record players wouldn’t function properly. next thing you know, billy is getting injured at a gig when people throw broken record players at him. monty starts crying. etc.
      the end.

it all makes sense now. the aeroplane was never an aeroplane. it was a metaphor for a record player to be released and thrown at billy over a decade later. and since it flies high, maybe it will be made of lightweight composite materials. we obviously need to contact monte to get to the bottom of this. can anyone email him?

i believe, at this point, monte cries FOR billy so that he doesn’t have to.

The SP shopping spree of last week in a nutshell: several radio promo cds, one of them containing \"Destination Unknown\". A promo compilation cd in a dvd case containing \"Freak\". And a Zeitgeist cd album pressed in Chile.

Not SP related, but I just have to mention it… Last week I was also very glad to have been in time to buy an extremely limited DVD release (50 only!) of one of my favorite bands, Magdalena Solis. It contains all their video work for the Hesperia album. NSFW, and not for the weak of heart too. For who’s interested: Jinxed, from the Lady Of The Wild Things EP, bonustrack of this DVD. As said, very NSFW.

I use dBpoweramp to do that. If you have that installed, you can Right-Click on the cd player of your PC/laptop and choose "Rip with dBpoweramp". In the next screen you can choose Rip to Flac/MP3, the folder where you want the files to be dropped, etc.

If I’m right, it is also possible to rip CDs to MP3 files with the Windows Media Player, but I don’t know how that works.

just put the CD into your computer. if you are running windows, windows media player should automatically open. it will try to identify the CD, but fail. that is no matter, though.

click rip CD and then find the file on your C: drive as an MP3 and send to some email somewhere.

I got some covers from a pc store, but i think they are mainly for cdrs. Most of my card sleeves fit, however my Australian ones don’t and my TBK ones don’t either.

Ebay is a good bet,but just make sure they give you the dimensions.

Can’t believe it too. I’m happy to have found that EU/NL promo already outside eBay (for 1/3 of that price, which seems OK to me) but I’m still looking for the US Panopticon promo. I refuse to pay more than $100.00 for Panopticon, but so far they all go beyond my limits. What is it with the Oceania promos? :?

Latest item: Smashing Pumpkins Sacred and Profane tour backstage pass, I know not many people want these, but this is one from their last show in London – although I was in London at the time, I didn’t go for various reasons.
The pass has the Theosophical Society emblem on it, and I am a member – so a pretty cool item for me 8)

thanks Sven! I’ve only been a member a couple of years – it is interesting to say the least! Some stuff is a bit weird for me, but some of it helps with understanding a lot of what Billy was trying to say with the Machina mystery, the Vasily Kafanov artwork, and some of the stuff that was in his EFH2T blog!

Unless your cd player eats 5 out of 10 cds lately, which means it needs to be replaced urgently, you can always play any cd. Some cd-rs might be unplayable on some cd players, but neither cd nor cd player will be harmed in the process of finding out. Vinyl is a different story though.

      Glad you enjoyed MII! :)

    • #45735

if you’re going to start collecting cassettes, for rare ones, you’re in for a ride. some of the hardest ones to obtain are NZ pressings. then promos, test cassettes. then basically any AU cassette in good condition, starting with siva and i am one. perhaps even harder or equally as hard, are JP promo cassettes.

there are a few one ofs as well, plus the early demo cassettes, especially ones w/ billy’s handwriting. i could go on and on! i think i have around 20 cassette releases or so for siamese dream, alone. :)

I like it. Although I was never really into the idea of them playing Oceania from start to finish, it must have been a special experience I regret I missed out on. Sound and image quality are excellent and the package is nice too (at least of the dvd+cd version, the rest I haven’t bought yet).

I got the Oceania Live in NYC this Saturday, DVD+2CD version. The filming is pretty slow-paced, clearly made for 3D, but the show itself is really good. X.Y.U. is by far one of the coolest songs on there (goosebumps Arthur? ) and it’s cool to have an official release of The Dream Machine! So yeah, well worth it!

$73 seems like a real bargain. these used to go for a lot more, if i remember correctly.

      Ditto, really rare stuff.

On its way is now a TAFH reissue promo poster, and a 1991-1998 promo cd signed by Melissa, Billy, Jimmy and James. I’m not a signatures freak really, but it fits the signed Today promo I own. And it was not expensive either.

Now I also found a Japanese promo for the Oceania Live In NYC 2CD/DVD release. Happy! 8)

Here’s a pic of that signed promo CD I bought last weekend. For some reason I love it. Especially Melissa made her signature quite extraordinary, with extra XX, and an arrow! And all autographs are crystal clear too!

Furthermore, I have the idea that Billy wrote 99 at his signature. He is known to write a year next to his autograph on many occassions, mostly as a full year though. It should have been 1999 then. So maybe it’s something else (a heart)? When it turns out to be 99 indicating the year it was signed, it makes this promo CD quite something. So far I have never seen an autographed Smashing Pumpkins item from 1999, a year when not much happened in SP world, public appearances-wise.

And we know this promo CD was released in December 1999, so it must have been signed almost immediately in its month of release then. Most likely locations where it was signed were at the two Metro, Chicago gigs the band did that month. The seller had no clue however; he bought it from someone in Michigan, and that’s all he knew about it. He only suggested, without knowing for sure, there might have been a signing session with Smashing Pumpkins in that same period in Michigan.

What are your thoughts, fellow collectors?

    • #45875

      Arthur
      Spectator

A friend just told me it’s not 99, but a heart or star doodle. We know of a December 1999 Metro flyer that was signed by Billy Corgan, and he clearly wrote 1999 there. At the Machina era signing sessions in 2000 this promo cd was given away and sometimes signed. Also many Machina lithos were signed during these sessions. We have a few examples of them on SPfreaks in the Autographs section. Melissa kept her signature more ‘simple’ most of the times with just an X before and after MAdM. Good to know! :)
