SvenSpectatori’d rather hang out with Bram, Milan, Arthur and co. then listen to the show, I’m afraid….
SvenSpectatordrown recording sessions, according to spfc.org:
http://www.spfc.org/band/studio.html?session_id=12
http://www.spfc.org/band/studio.html?session_id=13Early 1992 – Waterfront Studios
The band’s first of three attempts to record Drown. This one, recorded at Lenny Kravitz’s studio, was scrapped as the output sounded more like a Kravitz recording.Mar 1992 – Smart Studios
The second attempt to record Drown proved useless, as Jimmy began drinking as Billy & Butch set up and adjusted the sound; by the time the band was ready to record, Jimmy was literally falling of his stool drunk.[/quote:u0ocsdts]
so, if this is correct, the waterfront recording was the first attempt.
but that still doesn’t prove that that is the version that is available on that promo cassette.
also, when was the definitive version recorded? also in march 1992, at smart studios?
and where does the sprc version fit in?[/quote:u0ocsdts]the one up for free now is a new version, i think as of yet unheard…
the one on Singles was recorded with Vig at Smart in march 92.
SvenSpectatorto be honest, we don’t even know for sure it was recorded at Waterfront.
they told me they did do recording there (STP amongst others) but had no recollection of a taping of Drown there….
SvenSpectatorApart from some static around the 5-minute mark I think this is the version we as die-hard fans have had for years… But: that’s just listening; have to do real comparisons…[/quote:13olt7u9]
you mean the version that can be found on this tape? http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … &item=1686i think the sprc version is yet another recording of drown.
also, in regards to that spfreaks.com entry: i don’t think the waterfront studios recording of drown is the first recording. it is an earlier recording, but i didn’t think it was the first one.[/quote:13olt7u9]
Second and third listen: i think it’s yet another one…
And nope: the Waterfront-one isn’t the first one.
SvenSpectatorApart from some static around the 5-minute mark I think this is the version we as die-hard fans have had for years… But: that’s just listening; have to do real comparisons…
Looking forward to more though and this was a very nice treat, already.
SvenSpectator08-11 HMH, Amsterdam
SvenSpectatorDutch and Belgian show – most likely: on route from Denmark to France:
06 or 07 – Amsterdam / Rotterdam
07 or 08 – Brussels / GhentUK tour – between Paris and the German tour…
venues?
The Netherlands: no Paradiso.
06 for the Melkweg (too small, when compared to the other venues this tour??!!)
06 for the HMH
06 for the 013
06+07 for the Ahoy’ (isn’t that way too big???!!)
SvenSpectatori know of some person who didn’t buy a new item, but was given a new item for his awesome collection, right, Arthur
SvenSpectatorNew:
http://www.spfreaks.com/?page=COLLDETAILS&item=3501 (I Am One AU Cassette)[/quote:2mez018w]
cool item
SvenSpectatorYeah, I know what you mean, Bram, I was a little confused too. But when I compared the W and E for example, Billy writes them differently.[/quote:3c242yns]
but those are mainly small letters. the machina promo is all capital letters. of course there are going to be differences between how someone writes GLASS and glass, or E and e. no?[/quote:3c242yns]
Fair enough. Maybe it is Billy’s handwriting after all. And I think Derek is right, I have seen this promo with the SP logo somewhere before, so it must be a tracklist copied from another source… Or this is the source maybe? I hope to receive these items in September I hope, after I paid the full bill. Will keep you guys posted, as usual![/quote:3c242yns]
def. BCs handwriting. no worries…
SvenSpectatori think age of innocense is missing due to the early nature of the promo?[/quote:39gtx9g7]
possibly. wasn’t age of innocence the last song they recorded? i believe i’ve read that somewhere.btw, it’s age of innocence. two times c. http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … &item=8656[/quote:39gtx9g7]
correct, last song recorded, added at the last minute.
SvenSpectatoryeah i know, but it’s weird they type and print it out on the insert.
still one of the coolest finds, arthur. i’d pay a fortune for that cd.[/quote:2vln9cah]
You mean more than 150 bucks? That’s what I agreed on eventually. That includes a package deal discount for 10 rare cds in 1 go, btw. It’s by far the most expensive cd in the package, but I think it’s still a rather fair price for this rarity, right? These are the other 4 cds I just obtained.
[/quote:2vln9cah]
VERY NICE ITEMS!!!
SvenSpectatorit’s basically not a misprint…
it’s just that the printer had a miss-hap somewhere…[/quote:nxzan6a8]
i know. i just want to see if we can find out where. i know it’s not important, but why not give it a go? it gives everyone the opportunity to take their copy in their hands and look at it from a new perspective.[/quote:nxzan6a8]true and nothing wrong with holding a copy of the MCIS vinyl in your hands
SvenSpectatormy copy is at my girlfriend’s place but there’s no line!!!
nr < 6.000i would not make too much out of this…
some sleeves were printed with a line, some without…
shit happens in printing enormous amounts of sleeves in hi-res…it’s basically not a misprint…
it’s just that the printer had a miss-hap somewhere…
—
true examples of rare fuck ups are some copies of Today 7\" where the label is literally ON the vinyl and thus off centre and misplaced…
))
this is just one example, there are many more…
SvenSpectatorAfter more than a year, I’m reviving this thread… feels weird.
The only thing I can add besides the great news about the archives (which makes my search about early sp history pointless now that everything is in the archives and hopefully will be released soon). I found out that the guys from SPLRA just added a new song to the first ever SP show.
This show is from June 9th 1988. Last year it had "Lock Me Up" as the only song on their setlist, but now that I check, they added "Bleed". I’m guessing this is the same version as the MP version cuz it features only 1 guitar and 1 bass hence Billy and James only with a drum machine.
Interesting, I wonder how this guys got the info about Bleed played in the first SP show.[/quote:z6ciofgv]several tracks were online briefly, hence the source….
SvenSpectatorAwesome!!!!
I’ve known about this signed Today for AGES!!!
Glad it’s in your collection now!!!
SvenSpectatorHolding it as we speak, being the proud new owner…

SvenSpectatorif you can rip a song or two, three from that german promo once it arrives, i wouldn’t mind confirming where it comes from.[/quote:2m485108]
OK, cool.[/quote:2m485108]Sunday…
It’s the EA rip, no doubt!!!!
SvenSpectator3- mII tracks released officially > those are non-vinyl from the master reels/takes.[/quote:1oxoirrt]
yeah, this is also what i’ve always heard/read. but how exactly do we know this? is it just the most logical guess, or has this been checked or confirmed?[/quote:1oxoirrt]uhm official confirm > not that i KNOW of…
but, it doesn’t make any sense to use the poor vinyl cuts…
the degradation in the cut acetate vinyls is so huge and the quality of the off. released sound is so high i just cannot fathom how even a ‘virgin’ copy of the MII vinyl set would yield that quality; even the Q101 copy sounds terrible when compared to the released tracks.
SvenSpectatori don’t know! this was stored somewhere in my memory, but if you guys haven’t heard about it, it must be false. maybe i was getting confused about this copy and i thought they handed it out to random people instead of the record company.
also, maybe they say "cd master", because for their promo, whatever cd they got from billy was the cd master.
i don’t think billy would give a way a non-vinyl source of this album just like that. doesn’t match the whole plan. sometimes i even wonder if the couple of machina II tracks that were officially released on cd were sourced from the vinyls. i wouldn’t be too surprised.[/quote:lko39zsh]1- ah ok…
2- cd-master > agreed
3- mII tracks released officially > those are non-vinyl from the master reels/takes.
SvenSpectatoris this one of the cds the band handed out to fans during their tour in europe?[/quote:2muada5v]
Hmmm… Never heard about this, have you ever seen such a copy?[/quote:2muada5v]Bram > what copies should this be??? never heard about these…
SvenSpectatorWell, the Virgin letter speaks of a "CD-Master" given to them at the Munich concert (that was 2000/09/24), and the Machina II vinyl was released on 2000/09/05. So I found the vinyl rip story trustworthy, though funny… Why would Billy want a vinyl rip back of his own release, while he can order to urgently send a proper master from the US if he wants to listen to it, or give it away on the road? Trustworthy, when it was a rather spontaneous action in Munich and the only thing to give away was the cd-r of his friend (Eric Agnew, I understand now). But, when it is indeed a CD-Master as a source to this promo, it might be interesting to check it out anyway. Let’s see, I’ll keep you informed.[/quote:2rc42x33]
1- EA made the transfer, quickly and went on tour in Europe.
2- BC wanted a copy for Mel to listen to.
3- BC asked EA to make these ‘tour’ copy or copies…
4- EA made the cdr BC got
5- this is the ‘too fast’ initial rip of the vinyl
6- BC didn’t have any masters at hand so he asked EA
7- it was only meant for on the road listening for Mel and the band
8- until finding this CDR promo i’d never known about BC giving his copy (with his writing) away to Virgin Germany and i don’t think it was meant to when he asked EA; i gather it was an act of gesture and spontineaty on BC’s part as per the letter included
9- this CDR is sourced from BC’s ‘master" which in fact is EA’s CDR rip from the album’s vinyls
SvenSpectatorWhat I know of this M2 promo, is described already on SPfreaks. I received some (rather small) pics of it years ago and uploaded them in the collection. Check this, it contains the pic I showed here.
http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … S&item=553
I discussed this thingy with a few friends years ago, and what I heard was that it contains/might contain the very first vinyl rip that was slightly too fast. An American friend of Billy (the initial vinyl ripper maybe? I don’t know) traveled with the band on their Europe tour (or followed soon after during the tour), and he was posessing this vinyl rip on a cd-r, or something like that. He gave that vinyl rip cd-r to Billy, who gave it to Virgin Schallplatten (or a copy of it). Virgin then made a little promo out of it for a few people (see letter). And I will hopefully soon receive one of those promos…
(I’m not sure why Sven thinks it will never hit the market again, well, at least NOT MY COPY, but there will be a few more copies around I guess. Sven? No?)
I will scan it to improve the pics on SPfreaks of course, and will let you guys know what version of the M2 release is on the promo (presuming I can figure that out
). We can hope it is another, unknown version, but I don’t think so. And I’m not even sure if I remember this story described above properly, so anyone who can correct/finetune it is happily invited to do so.[/quote:35uq6reo]
I believe this to be accurate.
And: indeed, i was talking about your copy. Maybe another one will pop up eventually. You never know. -
