ArthurSpectatorLightning Strikes, Freak, Song For A Son, I love these songs. Waiting to see if it all evolves into a new Gossamer?
ArthurSpectatorThe CD says made in Taiwan, but who knows with these screwy things… China it is then![/quote:2pg7r8xb]
Where, did I miss it maybe? I based it on the code ISRC CN-A01-97-338-00/A.J6, which is a Chinese code (CN = China).
ArthurSpectatorMy two latest pumpkins related purchases. I had to convert Billy’s strat to be left handed, but it does play very nice.[/quote:1p7b028k]
Did they forget to release that guitar in a left handed version also? Probably… Yeah, well, happens a lot, right?
ArthurSpectatorThere’s nothing on this page though: http://www.spfreaks.com/?page=COLLDETAILS&item=3387[/quote:38nq0fza]
Ssssshhhh… Don’t tell anyone… Sometimes I reserve special hidden pages for Billy Corgan, where he puts his extremely rare stuffs from the vault… So, he can maintain his My Collection list on SPfreaks.com… But unfortunately, and I’m sure you understand that, I cannot tell what those type of hidden pages contain, but believe me… it’s all!!!
ArthurSpectatorSeveral concert tickets from 1992 – 2010 added, starting here:

ArthurSpectatorthere’s a mistake on this entry: http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … &item=1899
the track length for the 4th track is wrong. it is also listed incorrectly on the label. it’s not 7:04, but 6:09, just like on this release (same tracks, but in different order): http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … &item=2706[/quote:3fz418jr]
Has been corrected now. Also, to be consequent, I think the name of track 4 on that acetate cd should be Electro Breakbeat Dub instead of its earlier title Breakbeat Mix Instr. It is the same track.[/quote:3fz418jr]
Yup, has been corrected.you can always choose one title to be the spfreaks default listed title, and then mention that the artwork lists a different title in the item’s "extra information".[/quote:3fz418jr]
Yeah, true. Actually, I already have that rule implemented since the start of this silly project, but I don’t stick to it, always. And sometimes I just don’t know what song is where and when it is (maybe or not) the same song with a slightly different title. Those mixes are a crime!in relation to this issue, i have checked two more items with different titles, but the same songs:
http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … &item=1797
http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … S&item=794
if you click the b-sides, you only find these two releases, but these tracks are also available on all the other 3-track untitled singles.[/quote:3fz418jr]
Was corrected earlier today, see other topic about this Untitled single. As a side-effect of this inquiry, I found out that the commercial release date for Untitled was 5 November 2001, I didn’t know about the 5 yet. SPFC.org for example, just puts it in 2001 somewhere…(on top of that, "try, try, try alt. version" also appears on machina II.)[/quote:3fz418jr]
New info, is corrected now also! Thanks Bram! Bring ’em in!
ArthurSpectatorOK, this is what I just did, I hope it is to everybody’s likings.
All 8 known Untitled 3 track cds, starting with Billy’s test pressing, all the way up to the commercial releases, have the same 3 tracktitles. And database-wise they are the same tracks also. So, when clicking on the track, it will show all other releases with the same track on it.
The tracklengths are not correct anymore, because on some releases some tracks are 1 or 2 or 3 seconds shorter, compared to other releases. I cannot help it… I choose a tracklength kinda ad random, please tell me if it should be changed. Next to that, the info text is changed here and there. Please check if it is correct now?
Please copy the whole URL below to check all Untitled releases. It will include the Q101 release and the French promo, but I did not change anything on them. Meaning, the Q101 question of Bram is still standing. I don’t have that Q101 promo for a comparison…
http://www.spfreaks.com/?page=collindex … ease|ASC|0
By the way, I did not change the Untitled (Pop Mix) upload. It is still considered a different release, with a different track. I made 320 kbps MP3 rips of 4 different Untitled releases (Billy’s acetate, UK inhouse promo, Pop Mix and UK commercial single), if someone needs them for a second opinion on my inquiry, just shoot me a line here.
ArthurSpectatorRon would say it was still the marked, but it really wasn’t, it was billy’s solo demos with the help of Len and sometimes Ron.[/quote:2dj5d4eu]
It might be true, but written history overrules the oral history here, if it was to me. At some point when this cassette was made by Billy, he clearly labeled it The Marked, he clearly writes the dates and gives credits to the people involved in making the cassette (Ronald Roesing in this case). My question would be in general: who is so eager to say that The Marked broke up in October 1986, to whom’s interest is it that the broke-up date is set to October 1986? Think about it…On the other hand, let’s be honest, Billy Corgan is not always very accurate when it comes to dating (I mean songs here, not girls… that last subject can be discussed in another topic!
). See Mashed Potatoes, he made several mistakes in dating the songs. To Billy, songs are sometimes 1 year older then they really are.
Interesting pointing out what Jesse Miller said, I never heard that he said that. It might be true though, but it’s odd that Dave would state otherwise.[/quote:2dj5d4eu]
Yeah same thoughts here, and I’m neutral about it, I don’t care when and where it was recorded. All I can say is: the song Hope doesn’t sound like a copy from a 1980’s cassette, to me it sounds like a very proper studio recording, in line with the budgets of Smashing Pumpkins in 1992. Wouldn’t you say so too? And maybe Dave can be asked for a second opinion also, since he can put the 2 versions next to each other…
ArthurSpectatorMy screwy Taiwan pirated version of Machina | The Machines of God has yet to be added…
[/quote:3sflhcju]
Oops, indeed, sorry! Here it is:http://www.spfreaks.com/?page=COLLDETAILS&item=3362 (China I think, because of the codes on the CD)
Only 554 images left in the backlog…
ArthurSpectatorArthur:
And about the early Hope song, yes that’s the "Hope" Tape or "Greta Garbo" tape from late 1986-early 1987.
I don’t think it was re-recorded in 1992, Dave Asselin says it’s the same as the Hope tape from the marked period. He owns the tape, he confirmed this, as well as giving a copy to billy which I assume it’s in the archives.[/quote:lj9n2t0l]
Jesse Miller stated in 2000, Hope was (re-)recorded in Spring 1992, in the Soundworks Studios, together with Kerry Brown. They also recorded Bullet Train To Osaka, Starla & Plume during that session.http://www.netphoria.org/recording/recording.htm (search for Hope)
And that version of Hope was released on Still Becoming Apart, as far as I know? And it makes sense, because when I listen to Hope, it doesn’t sound like it comes from a 1986/1987 cassette. But I leave that judgement to the sound experts…
ArthurSpectatorBilly is referring to the 1986 material he made when he returned from florida to chicago after the marked broke up in october 1986.[/quote:3k5qoqm2]
I was thinking The Marked broke up early 1987, since we know about this The Marked tape, that obviously contains demos from January 1987?http://www.spfreaks.com/default.aspx?pa … &item=1713
ArthurSpectatorAnd Canada yes, you’re right! Just checked that, but why isn’t it on SPfreaks yet? Who has it?
But yeah, that song rights thingy is a mystery to me sometimes. Same for Image Rights and other Copy Rights. Billy sells Today (was it?) to some creditcard company, but he is still allowed to play it live (makes sense of course) and then what? He probably can not sell it again to any other commercial party I guess? Does that mean on the other hand that he owns the rights of the recordings of the Today era songs? Or can he re-record it in another (or same) studio and sell that new recording? Is he allowed to make a new mix of the old recordings and sell it? And what when he shares the rights of some songs with his ex-bandmates (Soma, I Am One, for example)? I don’t want to know…
Just curious why he is mentioning 1986 in relationship with Smashing Pumpkins, while everybody knows that it is another Smashing Pumpkins timeframe curve that he is selling (which I’m not buying).
ArthurSpectatorWhat is that tape from Joe Shanahan about? It rings a bell… But not clearly, as yet.
But when he refers to 1986, it has nothing to do with Smashing Pumpkins, I’m sure. Untill the beginning of 1987, Billy was still in a band called The Marked, and the only known official Smashing Pumpkins recording is from the end of 1987: the song I Fall. There are some (confirmed? I don’t know) rumours about a tape that might contain the earliest version of the song Hope, that was later re-recorded in 1992 and released on a promo called Still Becoming Apart. That promo came with some Machina, The Machines Of God CD albums in the US and UK/EU early 2000. Hope was a Marked song actually, from the 1985/1986 era. This is how far my memory goes…
And talking about rights, I guess he owns the rights of all the old songs already? There were issues with Virgin a few years ago, but that was about the later songs, starting from the Gish era… Billy settled the rights of a lot of old stuff (think 1987-1991) already by registering a handful of cassettes at the Library Of Congress. Well, let’s wait and see what this is about.
ArthurSpectatorI’ll check and correct the others brought in by Bram too, but not now. Not an easy fix…
[/quote:3jj9hobt]
I care Bram, I really do. I’m just as detailed about these issues as you are. But you know, running this thing since 2003 almost all by myself, it is quite a job… I was hoping that all moderators that have/had access to the maintenance tools would be doing their jobs, but most loose interest after a while, and I cannot and will not blame them. I’m not the person to kick people’s asses all the time. If they are not interested enough to ask for an extra training, or any other help, so be it. I really understand it’s a hell of a job, maintaining almost 10,000 pics, over 3,000 items, almost 1,000 titles, over 10,200 live and studio tracks… The Price Guide, the studio and live gig locations, scanning new items, taking pics, asking for info to double check, listening over and over to discussed songs, see all connections between the info entered in the database, effects of implemented changes, etc. etc. etc…All websites have issues like this, like SPFC, SPLRA, etc. Basically, the work is done by 1 person, with a little help from 1 or 2 goodhearted friends… Who doesn’t have the full focus all the time, let alone the spare time to do everything necessary… So please bear with us, dear friends! Debby, don’t let Bram scare you off, I know where he lives and will punch his face when he doesn’t offer us a good Belgium beer now!
ArthurSpectatorPic probably taken at his mansion?
ArthurSpectatorYes, kinda, but no. Each title has its own track length to make it (more) unique… How to solve that?
ArthurSpectatorThis has to wait a bit guys, I’m in the middle of several interviews with the guys that arranged Smashing Pumpkins to have their first gigs outside the US/Canada in 1991, and it might all lead to a pretty cool read again (remember the Melkweg interview of 2009?).
Also I might have a new Dutch date/venue for the 1992 European tour, but that takes some more research. I’m even trying to find a recording of that so-far-unknown Dutch gig, but no promises… At least I want some more proof like posters, tickets, contracts etc. Keep you posted, as usual!

another CD in need of updating[/quote:z0eqt2ml]
Done, easy fix. I’ll check and correct the others brought in by Bram too, but not now. Not an easy fix…
ArthurSpectatorIt’s over 5,700 dollar now.
ArthurSpectatorLast night I had a friend over, and we played the original BBC Transcription discs with the 1993 and 1995 Smashing Pumpkins concerts. Man, did we have headbanging fun!
But I came to realize that the 1993 disc is being introduced by DJ Mark Goodier, the guy that received that unique Cherub Rock promo CD ( http://www.spfreaks.com/?page=COLLDETAILS&item=3241 )!
\"Hello, this is Mark Goodier, welcome to In Concert. Today we have a quite stunning American band who’ve really made an impact over the last few months: The Smashing Pumpkins. This Chicago based band is lead by the extremely talented Billy Corgan, who writes the songs, sings and plays guitar. Journalists and musicfans alike have become hooked on the strength of the group’s songs on their album called Siamese Dream. And as you’ll hear, the live performance lives up to the promise of their recorded material. We recorded them in Manchester as part of their recent UK tour. So stand by for some serious live music, this is Smashing Pumpkins.\"
(applause of Manchester audience, Quiet thunders in…)
ArthurSpectatorhttp://www.spfreaks.com/?page=COLLDETAILS&item=3361 The Solstice Bare NL 4 track promo
ArthurSpectatorAs promised, it arrived today. Indeed quite the rarity! Thanks Sven, for thinking about me and reserving 1 of the few copies for me… This will otherwise be extremely hard to come by, I’m sure. Maybe only a dozen of these have been made, I guess?
http://www.spfreaks.com/?page=COLLDETAILS&item=3361
ArthurSpectatorJust wondering… those professionally recorded live shows, are they all on cassettes? And not handed over to Billy in a digital way like DAT tapes or CD-Rs? My wild guess would be that cassettes were only used for the first 5-8 years (demo tapes, few commercial tapes, live tapes, and occasionally for rehearsal tapes and tapes for the fan community in later years also). Or were most/all live shows up to the last show in 2000 also recorded (only) on cassettes? Hard to believe… But I’m no real insider in that world, so I wouldn’t know, actually.
ArthurSpectatorYeah, same here. They should walk-the-talk, only then I’m getting excited.
The only thing I see as a positive thing here is that we know now Billy has a stunning amount of over 700 cassettes. We can only guess how numerous the rarities are on them… Most of them cassettes will contain recordings of live shows I’m sure, though. Promising anyway, for a future release, but I fully agree with Bram.
ArthurSpectatorThe Solstice Bare 4 track promo CD (with the friendly help of my friend Sven)
Never heard/seen this before, which is kinda weird. The somewhat rare 1 track promos for Teargarden EPII are known, but no 4 track promo, as far as I know. It’s being shipped as we speak, I’ll give an update when I receive it.
