ArthurSpectatorIs it correct to call this an acetate? Doesn’t acetate mean CD-R? Because this looks like a silver cd.
Also, I believe this must be a master for the Australian release. The matrix code says D.A.T.A., and I’ve only seen that on (a lot of) Australian cds. (Normally the other side of the cd also contains a DATA logo.)[/quote:1mfcae7i]
I agree on both notes. Only Australian cds of the Smashing Pumpkins contain the D.A.T.A. logo and matrix (mostly around 1998, if I’m right). I googled a bit around, and here is a little history on D.A.T.A. I found on the Pink Floyd Australian Compact Disc Discography website:
1986 – In July 1985, EMI Music began conversion of its videodisc manufacturing facilities in Australia to the manufacture of compact discs. CD production began in early 1986 by EMI Music Group Australasia, a subsidiary of EMI Music.
1992 – In 1992, EMI Music Australia formed Digital Audio Technologies Australia (D.A.T.A.), a joint venture with Warner Music Australia. A D.A.T.A. compact disc manufacturing plant was established in Sydney, Australia.
2004 – In late 2004, EMI Music Australia sold Digital Audio Technologies Australia (D.A.T.A.), to Summit Technology Australia Pty Ltd, effective December 31, 2004. Summit began manufacturing EMI CDs for Australia.[/quote:1mfcae7i]
So, I will change the country of this Master to Australia later today. Then, talking about acetates… I found an interesting definition of an Acetate on an Iron Maiden collectors website:
Before the advent of using the Compact Disc to record/ playback in the studio vinyl acetates where used by the band and engineers to listen to what had been put down. Also known as Reference discs, the draw back for these vinyl acetates was –
a. poor quality playback audio
b. short life span – the vinyl acetate would actually begin to break up and all audio would be lost after a period of time.So in the recording studio the CDR (Compact Disc Recordable) replaced the vinyl acetate and has become to be known as a Studio CDR or CDR Acetate. Basically it is just the album or parts of the album recorded onto CDR, sometimes as un-mastered demos and with studio sleeve notes penned by the engineer or producer. These particular recordings are not promos! As they are not released for promotional purposes. They are the sole property of the recording studio and very rarely make it into the hands of the collector. They can also command extraordinarily high prices.[/quote:1mfcae7i]
On SPfreaks.com we use acetate in 3 ways so far, as Type of release.
-Acetate (First Test Pressing) => 31 cds
-Acetate (Master) => 1 cd
-Acetate (Used As Promo) => 59 cdsNext to that we have the "Item (Promo)", which also contains the Radio cds… Which I wanted to separate also, Type of release-wise. All in all, a bit messy, and the Type of release field is not properly used here and there also. I would like to suggest the following changes to be implemented:
-Commercial Promo => used to be "Item (Promo)", to be used for the common promos with full artwork
-First Test Pressing => used to be "Acetate (First Test Pressing)", to be used also for Inhouse Studio Reference discs
-Inhouse Promo => used to be "Acetate (Used As Promo)", to be used for the more uncommon CDR Acetate/b&w promos (but the distinction is not always very clear here, as they can be commercial promos also…)
-Radio Show => to be created new, to be used with the existing Format "Media For Radio Broadcast"
-Studio Master => used to be "Acetate (Master)"Is this a way to go? Any comments? Shoot!

ArthurSpectatorThe Canadian Mellon Collie mispressing, that turned out to be a very uninteresting mixed up US/CA cd set, has been replaced by a very cool signed Gish cd I found a while back on eBay. Read the story of the seller, I advice you!

ArthurSpectatorBut some sort of spirituality is present in the songs, the music, the lyrics.[/quote:1ws6p8ju]
Explain? What means spirituality to you? And how and where do you find it in the songs, music and lyrics of our beloved Smashing Pumpkins? I’m getting more and more curious now! This is what Wikipedia says about spirituality, by the way.
"Spirituality, in a narrow sense, concerns itself with matters of the spirit, a concept closely tied to religious belief and faith, a transcendent reality, or one or more deities. Spiritual matters are thus those matters regarding humankind’s ultimate nature and meaning, not only as material biological organisms, but as beings with a unique relationship to that which is perceived to be beyond the bodily senses, time and the material world. Spirituality in this sense implies the mind-body dichotomy, which indicates a separation between the body and soul. But spirituality may also be about the development of the individual’s inner life through specific practices.
The spiritual is traditionally contrasted with the material, the temporal and the earthly. A perceived sense of connection forms a central defining characteristic of spirituality â connection to a metaphysical reality greater than oneself, which may include an emotional experience of religious awe and reverence, or such states as satori or nirvana. Equally importantly, spirituality relates to matters of sanity and of psychological health. Spirituality is the personal, subjective dimension of religion, particularly that which pertains to liberation or salvation."
ArthurSpectatorDitto! Done! Tried it on a post and it works nicely!
ArthurSpectatortouchy subject. i’ll leave religion and god out of this, but i can say with 100% certainty that i definately have a spitirual connection with pumpkins music.[/quote:25ifihpu]
I don’t think it will affect fans. That article wasn’t focusing (not even mentioning) on Christianity, just spirituality, of any sort. We all have some of that inside ourselves. Spirituality in Pumpkins songs can’t be denied in any way.[/quote:25ifihpu]
Just curious… what kind of "spirituality" is that? I don’t have that too much (if at all) to be honest. I mean, I "feel" something when I hear a Pumpkins song that attracts me, but it has more to do with taking away the aggressiveness or mistrust I feel, or feeding the melancholy I have inside… Not really "being in touch with a higher being" or "uplifted in a spiritual way"or something. So I’m just very curious: what is spirituality exactly? What does it mean to you guys? And what has the Smashing Pumpkins music to do with it?

ArthurSpectatorTo be honest, I fear the box will be a little bit too small for the 14 extra shows. But I might be wrong. I hope it will fit perfectly.[/quote:20kss74u]
Judge yourself, but I know my opinion alright. Here are 14 shows (grey cds) & 24 shows (colored cds) together in "the box".

Year should be 2005. I emailed that a few times, but they probably disappeared…

Corrected now.
ArthurSpectatorAnd Tear should be 17 I guess?
ArthurSpectatorFor me, the \"mission\" (whatever that is
) of Smashing Pumpkins is best described in this song.
\"Emptiness is loneliness, and loneliness is cleanliness
And cleanliness is godliness, and god is empty just like me
Intoxicated with the madness, I’m in love with my sadness\"This is where I get my faith in everything from, how strange it may sound… When this is said/sung, it is away (the emptiness, god, sadness) and hope and trust comes back.
