So I have photos of both of my versions (promo and test press). Was gonna post them to show the identical \"Today\" inscription, but the inscription doesn’t show up. Even scanned it in at 200%. Not sure what to do. Are these photos even relevant anymore? Anyone care to see them?

If no, I’ll just send the proper scans onto spfreaks.

ah, i didn’t get that from the title. i understand now. yeah, that’s a possibility. kinda weird that they would sell it though.

first i thought the person who posted the pictures only recently bought them. (or maybe he did?)[/quote:uxu35fgu]

I think the purchase was quite recent.

would this be real or a hoax?

and if it’s real, how come it’s in the stores already, but nobody has heard about it before?

also, there seem to be two different items. are they two zeitgeists or is only one of the two zeitgeist and is the small box a completely different album/artist?[/quote:1yjx2hjg]

I think the term "Concept Release" or whatever, implies that this version was scratched. They do the same thing with cars. Make like one concept car, reveal it at auction shows, then scrap it. So they are very rare and collectable. Kinda similar the TAFH box prototype/concept that was rejected.

So, somehow, HMV got a hold of this. Maybe it was sent to them a long time ago and they just shelved it in the back somewhere. Who knows. I think it’s legitimate.

I think the bigger black book might be the prototype to the big red book release we eventually received. And the smaller box is the USB release. Most likely resembling a key chain of some sort.

Disclaimer: I could be proven wrong in time, just my initial thoughts on the matter at hand.

Thanks for the proper intro. Really unnecessary, but nice of you to do! Post whatever and whereever you want. We’re glad you’re here and look forward to our fellow Freak-dom.

Ringo Starr recently released his latest album as a USB plug in. Was actually pretty fucking cool. He was on Larry King Live with a white bracelet on. He took it off, gave it to Larry and said, \"here’s our new album\". Larry was like, \"Huh?\". Ringo’s all, \"Yeah mate, just poot it into your USB and have a listen.\"
So that’s probably what the USB thing is.

But who is JJ and why does he have one?

You know what’s really strange? After seeing the Pumpkins last year in 2007, I felt it was a strong \"greatest hits\" show. And the strong is not a positive. Left a bad feeling in my stomach.

SO, I used to be really psyched about the final Metro show being released, especially after the teases on the Greatest Hits DVD. But now, after 8 years, and after seeing the latest greatest hits show, I could honestly care less.

Of course, I’ve never been really into live recordings anyway, but still, what’s on there that you can’t find in concerts leading up to it? I get that it’s the last gig and all, but James was all pissy, D’Arcy wasn’t there, and they played songs everyone has heard live before. What’s the big deal? Did they play them BETTER this night? I doubt it. I don’t get the hype. :?

I finally managed to lay my hands on a really obscure 1992 German release called Going Underground. It’s a 2 CD compilation that gives an overview of the alternive music scene around 1984 – 1992. It contains a Smashing Pumpkins track, that’s why I badly wanted it. But I only just now found out it’s Rhinoceros, because I just received it. And the whole compilation: awesome listening experience! So glad to finally have it! And many many thanks goes to our webmaster (and personal friend if I may say so) manillascissor that helped me getting this one. You rock mister! 8)[/quote:3t0lunlz]

the fact that it’s a photocopy makes it less "rare" than i thought it was.

still a cool poster though. 1989-04-30. one of the few shows that year that we have a recording of.[/quote:2svprv6w]

Agreed. I was gonna bid on that, as I like the poster, but I have no money these days. Oh well. Glad now that I didn’t. Had no idea it was potentially just a copy. That really sucks. :(

    I recently got this.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi … :IT&ih=006

Thing is,on this site it says the cd comes in a jewel case. This is in a plastic sleeve.

The insert looks as its been photo copied,i think.

    Fake possibly?[/quote:wk5ovinw]

That looks real from the scan on the auction site. You can tell from the smudging inside the plastic case.

well, like you suggest, it’s done by different people.
i don’t see why that would be unlikely. i have vinyls with different inscriptions done in different handwriting. and they didn’t have previous owners.[/quote:26lovrtc]

Yeah, good point. Maybe you are right.

    manillascissor

Yes, it’s the test press for the promo, which you’ve linked to.

    manillascissor
    Keymaster

    1) The test press is identical to the 7" promo. The length of the groove (song length) are identical, and the run-off groove has exact same pattern.

    2) The test press has "Today" inscribed on both sides in the run-off groove, just like the 7" promo, and in the exact same handwriting.[/quote:1fs1z442]
excellent. this is a good sign.

the shoddy looking dire straits WLP indeed makes it very unlikely that someone is making his own WLPs by replacing the labels.

i find it a bit weird that someone inscribed "test pressed" on both sides though. is this common?
what makes you think the owner did this? why would he do such a thing? my (wild) guess would be that it was added at the record plant, or at the record label. you know, before it was given away to the dj.[/quote:1fs1z442]

If this were the case, why is it in different handwriting? That’s my only problem w/ that theory…

I guess it would have obviously made a better solo album, just based upon the strength of the songs. However, I believe it would have been dismissed as a load of crap at first and revisited later for the great album that it is. Much like TFE. People just love to hate on the Bill.

Interesting to know D’arcy suggested it be his first solo album. Very interesting. Not sure that would have gone over so well with the band, but then again, maybe the original lineup would still be around if that’s the course they took. Hmmmm………….

Still, my second favorite album of theirs, and second favorite genre to collect! :D

dammit, i didn’t know penis size mattered when choosing a car. do they measure it at the garage, in order to give you the best car advice?[/quote:1rbfgiyt]

see that’s the thing. it’s part of the negotiation process. you and the salesman subconscisely evaluate each other’s packages, and it’s never spoken about, but you both know the other’s is smaller.

so if you have a huge penis, you can get away with driving a ’92 subaru, and people will say, "hey, that guy must have a huge penis to be driving such a piece of shit."

and then when you see the oversized trucks with chrome plating, lift kits, tricked out engines you can comfortably say, "hey, that guy must have a vagina or something. poor bastard."

then watch No Country for old men[/quote:2s041dg6]
    Good movie.

The simple fact is that everything the pumpkins ever do and ever have done, is never trendy, it’s never fashionable…..that is….it’s not *when* they do/invent it, 5 years down the road however, everyone is doing it and aplauded for it.[/quote:2s041dg6]
I disagree. Remember Siamese Dream? Maybe you do, maybe you don’t. But at my high school, everyone listened to the Pumpkins. Everyone owned that album. Everyone had the t-shirt. At this point in their career, they were very "trendy". Only problem is, no one has been able to replicate that sound, not even the Pumpkins, even if by choice.

For example, you know that elecctro-folk thats so "in" right now? Who could possibly have been doing that back in 1998? [/quote:2s041dg6]
In right now? Who are you referring to? I know what song you are referring to on the Pumpkins side. At least I hope it’s Eye, and not The End is the Beginning is the End. If it is Eye, then I agree. I herald this song as one of the "Pumpkins" greatest tracks, and it’s without Jimmy. More on that later. Again, I don’t see anyone doing this today, and certainly not the Pumpkins.

Jimmy Chamberlain….well, Jimmy….what can you say about Jimmy? He’s simply the greatest Drummer to ever appear in a mainstream act….ever. Simple as.
Their are better drummers out there, but never (as in : EVER. Don’t give me that Keith Moon crap) in a band that touched the charts (Acoustic Ladyland come to mind, their drummer is phenomonal), and Jimmy’s jazz roots have helped keep the Pumpkins distinctive and different from all around them, at all times, and was probaby the reason the pumpkins live have always had such a freeform flow to them.[/quote:2s041dg6]
All right, this is just not as cut and dry as you make it out to be. There are MANY drummers in mainstream acts that are as talented or more so than Jimmy. Keith Moon is a great example, then let’s try Neil Peart, John Bonham, Danny Carey, John Dolmayan, shit Dave Grohl. He’s drummed (exceptionally) for 3 mainstream bands this decade alone. Don’t get me wrong, Jimmy certainly belongs in there, but he is not the only one to hit the charts.

The other members, well…I know I’m going to step on toes by saying this…but really…their irrelevant, pinning for James & D’arcy is nothing but nostalgia, and that is all, the original line up of the Pumpkins hasn’t existed since 1996, get over it. Pumpkins bass lines are not complex, so the bass player is always replaceable, and D’arcy never had any creative input in the band.
James was a good guitar player, and certainly brought his own touch to the live shows, he also co-wrote a handful of songs, I’ve nothing but love for the guy, but at the end of the day, the smashing pumpkins is Billy Corgan, listen to James solo album if in doubt, his Evan Dando style pop sensibilitys are not found in SP.[/quote:2s041dg6]
    Pretty much agreed. :D

I’d like to add that I just love when Billy Corgan helps out other acts (Courtney Love/Breaking Benjamin), he essentially gets zero credit. And the tracks he assists with are throwaway riffs for him, but end up being chart-toppers for the recipients. I just love that.

Unwept, Unsung. Tis part of his appeal. Self fulfilling prophecy I suppose.
