yeah, i’ve never seen a US lull. it doesn’t exist. no peel sessions either, but for some reason i never thought there was. ???[/quote:3b0h6roi]

correct, both were UK domestic only releases.

indeed, i’d say the US pressing for Gish was in 94.

somehow i still think SD and PI (plus, maybe even Adore) never went out of print as these are very easy to find.

There was no physical US pressing in 91.
The 91 Caroline LPs were made in Germany because it was the cheapest way to go.
In 91 it took HUT a couple of months (till August i think) to press the LP in the UK.

All Caroline LPs from 91 are manufactured in Germany.
All HUT LPs from 91 are manufactured in the UK.

True US Caroline LP pressings are all from 94 and remastered.

The LPs sold in the US from 91 with the Caroline barcode sticker are technically NOT a German import. These were made in Germany, but sold through the US label Caroline. These LPs were just made in Germany. These LPs were not released by Caroline Germany to be exact.

As far as I know all sleeves are the same for the original pressings and the remastered ones; the re-issue as a gatefold sleeve.

    Gish on vinyl:
91 Caroline Records US (manufactured in Germany)
91 HUT Records UK (manufactured in the UK)
91 Caroline Records/EMI KR (manufactured under Caroline US license in Korea)
94 Virgin Records US (remastered) (manufactured in the US)
94 HUT Records UK (remastered) (manufactured in the UK)

Comparing it with other places’ prices is a very valid argument.[/quote:233yrhy7]
not if they’re asking 280 euro for it at the other place. that way everything else is a fair price.

anyway, for me, 80 euro is too expensive for what it is.
and i would have felt the same about 40 euro for the pisces iscariot deluxe edition. i thought 30 euro was already pushing it.[/quote:233yrhy7]

the last bit about PI deluxe just doesn’t compute…
a remastered cd of the album alone would be EUR 18.
a stand alone dvd with this content as in the deluxe box would be EUR 20
then the cassette and the bonus disc are virtually "for free" with a retail price of EUR 38.

prices can and will only drop on box set releases if the company can use the old(er) masters.
this material was all mastered again and especially for these releases.
the print run will not be that stunningly high either.
figure in the cost of the remastering, remixing, archive-work, design and manufacturing of the boxes and all…
i guess these are a steal at this pricing.

now for MCIS there’s even more to the deluxe box set.
plus: with four vinyls a double price when compared to SD or PI would be pretty much normal.

all in all; with all the work gone into preparation for these releases and the final production standards I still cannot find these re-issues to be overpriced by any means.

what i think happened is this:

all bands deliver their respective materials. there are mixed and EQ-d and my guess is also pre-mastered.
these are then compiled and need a compilation mastering to make sure the overall levels are in check.

a pre-master for the compilation is most likely a cd featuring all tracks in running order and with the final mastering, which is then used to manufacture the final masters for production from. this would be in line with the fact that it has been mastered by KB. therefore i’d conclude it was not like a pre-FM, before KB did the (digital) mastering, but that the pre-master denotes the fact that this cd/this master-mix was used to create the production master, but was not itself the production-master.

a reference cd is normally made from the production-master to check before the production starts in full swing. if that one is approved, it can of course (as there will be no changes after that point) be used as a promotional/reference/in-house cd as it is bound to be identical to the finished product which will hit the stores. of course there will be promotional releases of the commercial product in due time (and especially for review and (radio)promotion), but when you want to bridge the period between the start of manufacturing the cds and the moment the commercial product press run items are ready, one can use the reference cd.

    15. There It Goes (demo)
    – starts almost as (minimal) techno
    – levels are WAY TOO HIGH up!!!! in this new mix; it’s new wave-apres-la-lettre…!!! yeah, thus”: one could do this mix, BUT: keep it ‘wave’, please
    – in way: much too hard (sounding) for the time
    – poor JC… he’s the metronome and some instants he can show his skill[/quote:6fupmyd0]
But is it the Mashed Potatoes version, it is, isn’t it? The liner notes of the Pisces Iscariot deluxe reissue state that it was recorded at River North, Chicago in 1988. Or is/was that Billy’s father home studio?

    http://www.spfreaks.com/?page=TOURHISTO … locid=1048

And SPFC adds them all together for 1988:

    http://www.spfc.org/band/studio.html?session_id=2[/quote:6fupmyd0]

yes, I think (but Jeroen can confirm with a back2back comparison) this is the one on MP.
but remixed of course, which would imply multitrack recording, which I find stunning at that stage of their carreer…

    – same as on MP only better quality[/quote:fe25700w]
The liner notes in the deluxe box booklet tell us that it was recorded at Sadlands, Winter 1992. Billy Corgan wrote 1990 on Mashed Potatoes. Billy is not always that good with dating his legacy (remember his slip of the tongue with the song Bleed at the Oceania cruise a little while back), so yeah… Another BC typo found on Mashed Potatoes…

    [/quote:fe25700w]

I think 1990 is correct. Sadlands as a name for his home recording studio wasn’t used till around 93/94 I think, when he moved from one apartment to the other. Also: this song sounds like a demo around the Gish time, not after the release of Gish. 1990 seems to be accurate is my estimation.

so this PLUME version is a fuck up?
i mean: the album is supposed to be remastered but the same as the original; this is a different version of the same song…

is there more discussion online about this than just these Dutch-speaking \"freaks\"… :)

i’m curious as to if there are versions of the cd, deluxe cd/dvd/box and vinyl are out there with the original PLUME?

vinyl has the same version of Plume; which differs from the one from the original PI.

i listened to my cd, and they used a different vocal take on plume. at least on some parts of the song. it’s very obvious. it sounds unfamiliar. weird.[/quote:2c513y20]

The mix, the intro and the lyrics are different…

The lyrics in the booklet are cleary for the 1994 Plume. Read them while listening to the 2012 Plume and you will notice that the lyrics are ‘swapped’ in some kind of way:

    1994 Plume: ‘gotta play’ in first verse, ‘what a waste’ in the second verse, ‘give enough’ in first verse, ‘give a fuck’ in second verse;
2012 Plume: ‘gotta play’ in both verses, ‘give a fuck’ in both verses.

Besides that, the 2012 Plume misses the repeating outro lyrics ‘bring me down’.[/quote:2c513y20]

correct sir, also seems to have a slightly different Iha-guitarpart…

have you guys compared plume to the original release?[/quote:2jyd99x6]

Not yet, but will do because at first listen the intro of the 2012 Plume did raise my eyebrows [/quote:2jyd99x6]

same hear, with the small "wheep" sound of an amp in the beginning is very much louder than I have known, on the vinyl it’s ever much louder.

    hello?!

Did a quick side-by-side compare… it’s (almost) the same track, only with a different mix. Sounds like BC fooled us

All the guitar parts are there already in the 1993 Glynis, but buried deep, very deep in the mix, because the bass part is mixed up front. This was altered in the 2012 Glynis; bass in the back, vocals and guitar up front.

The ‘spacey effect’ at ~1:35 got lost in the 2012 Glynis, that’s why we hear an additional BC ‘yeah’.

Only at the end of the track (at ~3:50) the vocals are clearly different.[/quote:2e9zgg7u]

    Nicely done Jeroen!!! Thanks.

    Pisces Iscariot
    2012 reissue
    demo tape

    1.
Nice to make a red tape and a different cover.
People owning the original thus cannot be duped.

    2.
    Poor quality sleeve and cassette.

    3.
    Why no normal cassette sleeve/holder?

    4.
The band has lost their master copies of these recordings.
This is so much more ‘hissy’ and ‘noisy’ than my own original copy.

    5.
Still a nich addition to the set!

    6.
Very nice that some tracks were remixed again!

    7.
Very glad the owners of the originals weren’t “fucked” with a replica, but got the tape yet again and if you want the real thing, you can get the real thing. Which is not this knock-off.

    The Glynis question:

on first listen (based on a FLAC file of Glynis):
    – this is another take (or pieced together from several takes)
    – there’s a very clear acoustic guitar absent from the original version
    – the drum sounds more up front
    – there’s a couple of BC vocal inflections not on the original
    – BC’s YEAH is VERY different and the timinig of the break seems shorter
    – the sitarsolo is much louder (and panned HARD to one channel only)
    – James kinda fucks up the wah-wah solo so the band kicks in again pretty soon (some seconds early?)
    – the ‘scream’ towards in the end is missing in the original
    – the ‘screams’and ‘laughs’ at the very end are missing in the original

    all in all:
i think they found the master reels for this recording.
normally a band like TSP would track a song multiple times on record.
i think in 2012 BC and co pieced together a new mix from several reels.
in any case: this is not just a different ‘mix’ per se, this also includes material not present in the original (or that would have been buried very very very low in the original mix, which was kinda muddy to start with, but i can hardly believe these were mixed down so far back then and pulled up front now. )
this sounds like a new Glynis to me.
