To be fair and perfectly honest, I dont’ even really enjoy vol.1 all that much. I think the box set was overpriced to begin with. I would have been happy to spend the $30 if it came with 3×7\" (including all songs) and a CD in the box. I am a record collector and find it a very tough pill ($300) to swallow. I’m not even sure I could justify $100. A backward track is really not that interesting but…I would like to have it 8)

…i’m trying to think of what to do with my pre-gish music? . . . perhaps a private press vinyl series? say 100 copies of each volume that could be auctioned for charity but never sold. marked/pre SP music!”

do more people notice a big difference in quality when comparing the known vinyl transfers (the "virgin promo" in particular) to the officially released tracks?[/quote:sf9of9dp]

I don’t claim to be an expert on any level but, aren’t the official tracks different takes and mastered differently?

For me, the officially released tracks sound better than the vinyl rips. I always prefer to listen to vinyl recordings than digital/CD but these rips seem overly compressed and muddy. Most of it is probably due to mastering for CD vs mastering for Vinyl. I can say that the differences between vinyl rips are less noticable to me than the difference between the vinyl rip and official tracks.

I read this to mean that they will all be reissued and they will all be given the high grade vinyl treatment.

I’m also assuming that everything will get a CD reissue. The question for me is, will only the CDs be remixed, remastered and include the bonus tracks, or will the vinyl be getting the same thing as well?

Yeah… What I heard is they will put Machina and Machina II together as 1 release in 2013… remixed, remastered & tracks put in the right order? Sounds cool.[/quote:1xe55bn7]

The key for me here is remixed and in the right order. He made mention of how unhappy "some people" (I think he means himself) have been with the mixes on Machina. I wonder which mix he’ll use of Try or Glass or HMM etc. and which one he’ll cut and turn into a bonus track. Take for instance he reworked HMM and BSBT for a live setting and I think it was for the better. I’m hoping those were studio mixes he has available for this release. Realistically, Machina and Machina II as one album should be a 3x or 4x LP release that is hopfully in a box of some sort.

Do we know of any additional tracks that were recorded at that time that haven’t been released on the albums or singles as b-sides?

Not me. I’m putting all my eggs in this basket. Hollywood or bust!

    Questions though;

    1. PI is a collection of \"Bsides and rarities\". so…..they are planning a reissue of Bsides and rarities with additional bsides and rarities?

    2. Aren’t the songs on PI from Gish and SD sessions? Which leaves the question, what bsides and rarites would be left, after the expanded reissue of PI, to be included on the STILL IN PRINT Gish/SD albums?

    1. Seriously, where is Gossamer already?!!!

    2. Billy needs to get heavy in a hury. I like what he’s doing but come on.

    3. Also, I think Jeff needs to be more involved in the studio. When he gets going in a live setting with his ambiance guitar filling in the background, I am truely impressed. It’s not really psych per se, but it adds a whole different dimension to the depth of each song. We need more Jeff on record now.

ADAT is full hard disk multichannel recording… they might have transferred some to CD(R), but i guess not to tape… it needs mixing too as it’s the clean SBD multichannel pre-fader mix.[/quote:15tofh1z]
you’re probably right. but wikipedia says there is such a thing as ADAT tapes.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADAT

Alesis Digital Audio Tape or ADAT is a tape format used for simultaneously recording eight tracks of digital audio at once, onto Super VHS magnetic tape – a format similar to that used by consumer VCRs.[/quote:15tofh1z][/quote:15tofh1z]

Initially I didn’t really care about the details of this discussion, but I’m glad that this part came up. I was looking at a photo that Pearl Jam included with their collection called "Lost Dogs" that pictures what looks like old VHS cassette cases. I just assumed that it was video but thought it was odd to include that photo for an audio package. Now it all comes full circle, and for that I am just a little bit smarter. I had never heard of ADAT, but I am really pretty impressed with the technology for what it was. Then again, I am not very fluent in recording techniques, I am easily impressed

    My database says:
AP is 1003X30 and WWMM is 1003X33
but to be sure, I will double check when I get home after work.

BTW, I also have the Teargarden Theme listed as 1002X63.

Does anybody know what pressing plant is being used for these singles?

I’ve been on the fence about this one since it first went up for preorder. The band seems a bit weird and the music doesn’t immediately grab me. I remember when they did a ustream in the studio with Fancy Space People and they really put me off. How much guitar is Billy credited? and is the album any good musically, or do the samples on Starry Records give an accurate representation?

I’m a big vinyl junkie and those white platters are tempting, but the cover art is atrocious  ! Win one, Lose one, even Stephen.

All joking aside, it’s not news that bands don’t make money selling albums. Has anyone heard of the bands who sold millions of albums but were dirt poor? It’s likely that the money they make from selling the limited physical product to the fans is to cover the cost of recording and producing the physical product of said songs released on the record. Billy was just smart enough to realize the potential of \"free\" music a long time ago. Bands make money from 1. Touring and 2. Merch; The more fans brought in by the \"free\" music, the more people there are to buy over priced tickets to the shows, and expensive tshirts or whatever other merch they decide to sell at the shows. I think that is why the sucessful artist today are touring constantly and selling merch like crazy. Maybe I’ve missed the mark, but that’s where I see things in the current music world…

Lifetime of a flexi…interesting. I dont’ know but I can guess and give a vague answer.

It depends how many times you play the record. The more you play, the deeper the groove gets. The greater the tracking force, the deeper the groove. Flexi disc are very, very thin (as mentioned already) so I can’t imagine a long life before significant distortion or some other unfortunate outcome. That is why alot of cassette dubbing was done years ago. To preserve very thin vinyl records when companies were getting cheap on material. That and cassettes were portable.

On a side note, Did anyone here win the daughter flexi yesterday? I wanted to win it but bidding got expensive in the last 20 seconds.

From what I see, every has been real. My only concern is the autos. They look real to me but I am never certain when it comes to handwriting. Also, I would be concerned with playing over the autos. I am a stickler for condition so I will try to not comment on that in my response.

I think that Lull is WAY overpriced. I bought a copy not long ago for a fraction of the price.

Mellon Collie is more than a bit damaged, I would suggest buying a new copy of Siamese Dream which can be had for less than $15. You can check retailers such as amazon.com for one. The autos are cool, but if he’s going to play the record, new is the way to go. plus it will save you alot of money that you can put towards buying a far nicer copy of Mellon Collie.

Today is ok but remember that you would be getting one of the two songs on this single on the Siamese Dream album. Plus I dont’ know how you feel about ex condition.

Ask more if you need help.
