mr.benwaySpectatorDavin, I’ve arranged an interview with John van Luyn, the guy that managed to hire the Pumpkins in 1995! Also, he is diving in the Melkweg Archives today to check what is left of contracts, posters, etc. (but he
warned already that he is afraid that most will be destroyed already…)

It works fine for me…Problems with IE? Use Firefox: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
Portable version (download Firefox_Portable_3.0.7_en-us.paf.exe, run .exe, choose a folder, the .exe extracts all required files into this folder, all bookmarks, extensions and saved passwords were stored in the selected folder, so you can take all this information with you (copy this folder to an usb-stick and you can use this on every computer) )

JIMMY SPEAKS…
[fake] Billy tweets pretty often and on myriad subjects, usually concerning (but not limited to): how the Cubs and wrestling are his only interests these days, how he is Smashing Pumpkins and the Smashing Pumpkins are him, being pissed at Courtney Love, doing whatever manager Irving Azoff tells him to do (including speaking to Congress on his behalf), how dropped D is the only tuning to write music in, how often he f–ks porn stars (namely Sasha Grey winner of the 2008 AVN for Best 3-Way), wanting more silver pants and/or Victorian dresses, talking about his goofy lawsuits that he has already defaulted on multiple times, and how the radio needs to pay him more. The joke well runs deep and plentiful – and sometimes you can’t make this stuff up. "The one thing to remember is that this guy is a HUGE Smashing Pumpkins fan ("Luna" may be his wedding song), but like a lot of people in the community, he has become jaded not so much on dissatisfaction with the music, but because of the press and the mythos surrounding Billy Corgan. Bloggins calls it "associative listening experience," where we "associate songs with ideas, memories, moods, and the like. The idea of something being overrated or underrated originates from this phenomenon – as you associate a piece of music or an artist with the press it gets. Billy’s infantile actions, since they are novel and epic in scope, have overshadowed the music for me and a lot of other folks."
So with the new SP twitter and a rumoured Billy Corgan twitter underway, what will happen to Bloggins and his satire? Well, if he doesn’t receive a cease and desist letter, than I’m sure the REAL Billy Corgan will do enough to fuel Bloggins for at least the rest of the year.
Bonus: Some excerpts from fake Billy Corgan twitter:
* Well, I wanted to shoot some make-up pool with Jimmy tonight, but *someone* is a little too upset to answer their fucking phone.

As reported by SmashingPumpkins.com, Kerry Brown had a speaking engagement at University of Southern California this weekend. Presumably he spoke shop about audio engineering and mixing, but his long time buddy Billy Corgan was with him.

WALKER LOVE…
Matt Walker, the touring drummer during the MCIS tour and recording partner of Billy Corgan has been profiled again this week by PMM Writer BlackChicago. This time we take a look at Matt Walker’s other projects like Cupcakes, Ashtar Command, Beautiful Assassins, Of A Thousand Faces, and Impossible Recording Machine.
Matt Walker recently gave percussion support to Jimmy Chamberlin during the Chicago shows on the recent 20th Anniversary Tour.

mr.benwaySpectator@all: phantastic lists
@Arthur: This matchbox-like CD looks really cool.
@Mayo: When did you buy all these stuff? Crazyyy…
I’ve browsed through my collection, but i didn’t find that many rare CDs:
– Machina 2 (4 cd-set, UK Acetate/CDR, In-House Promo?)
– Les Inedits de \"The Aeroplane Flies High\" (Frnch Promo)
– Try³ (Summersault Tour Dates) (Canadian Promo)
– Untitled And Other Choice Cuts (Canadian Promo)
– Adore (Canadian Promo)I have also 2 or 3 other CDR-Promos, but i’m not sure how rare they are. I’m not very interested in collecting CDRs.
What about the following CDs, does someone have more information. Are they \"rare\"?
– Thirty Three (UK Promo HUTCDJ78) i’ve read somewhere, this Promo was withdrawn and only little numbers where pressed. Why was it withdrawn?
– True Power, True Faith Rarities & B-Sides (Promo for the Smashing Pumpkins Digital Catalogue)
– Some of the first Australian Relaeses: Siva & I Am OneMr.Benway
mr.benwaySpectatorCongrats Honeymade.
I’ve bought:

– Catherine : ‘Four Leaf Clover’ (CD-Single + Promo-Single), ‘Whisper’ (CD-Single), ‘Hot Saki + Bedtime Stories’ (Promo-CD)

mr.benwaySpectatorNews from the Archive: Newsletter No.2
THE SMASHING PUMPKINSARCHIVE NEWSLETTER #2
Hello again,Welcome to the second Archive Newsletter. I am now entering the third week on the job, and I just want to say that I’m really excited about the project. I want to get into the more technical details about the archive. One of the biggest problems with storing media that is over 20 years old is tape deterioration. One example of this is the Ignoffo Demos. Mark Ignoffo was a studio engineer that worked with the band in 1988-89. The band would record demos at Reel Time Studios and then sell them at shows. The Moon Demo was a demo tape that was sold at shows in 1989 for $5. The songs from this period would include Stars Fall In, Daughter, and Bye June. These songs have been widely bootlegged out, but the quality has been questionable because many of these were sourced from old cassette tapes. The band has the original reels from those recording sessions in the archive. Throughout the years, these tapes have started to deteriorate and flake. Recently, the band has started to rescue these recordings. A technique to rescue tapes that are starting to flake is through baking. The tapes would be placed in an oven, and baked for a specific period of time. This restores the tape so that it can be transferred. In these cases, we often have one chance to transfer the tape before the tape is lost for good. The Ignoffo Demos were baked for 72 hours! Then they ran them through Pro Tools at 24-bit/96kHz, and the outcome was amazing. They sound so much better than the bootlegged versions that fans have. This would definitely be an upgrade if you already have these songs.
The next step is to rescue other tapes and reels that have started to deteriorate. All of the material in the archive is stored in a climate controlled environment in order to preserve them, and slow down the effects of time. Tapes and reels aren’t the only material that we have to carefully monitor. Paper is another concern for us. I’m currently going through and cataloging the band’s posters. I have found some early posters from the Gish era, and there are a few that have started to show their age. A way to combat this is to store them in acid-free polyester Mylar sleeves. The Library of Congress also uses the same types of sleeves for archival storage. I’m creating a system that will catalog and preserve all of the posters and artwork from the band. Eventually this system will include all of the promotional material that I’ve talked about in my recent blog post. I hope this sheds some light on what we’ve been doing. I’ll talk to you all next week!
Frank
[/quote:q61afz4b]Interesting fact: Posters and SP Promo Material are also in the Archive. I’m curious about it, love to see them. And more stuff for SPFreaks.
mr.benwaySpectatorCan somebody please copy that article of Sunky on SP.com, called "Dawn of a New Era"?

Portable version, no Installation, and use adblock plus: https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/1865Here is the article of sunky:
Dawn of a New Era
March 22, 2009 | 1022 Views
At the start of this year I wrote a piece on the next chapter for the Smashing Pumpkins and what we could possibly expect in 2009. This was based on the various media interviews given in late 2008 and at the time it seemed like we knew what to expect. However, as Billy once sang ‘all things change’.As the news on Jimmy Chamberlin’s departure appeared on SP.com, one word sprung to mind: ‘unexpected’. With the community reading the news in disbelief and some claiming this ‘has to be’ nothing more than an early April Fools joke, the shock announcement of a few days ago still hasn’t sunk in for many fans.
"The SMASHING PUMPKINS’ guitarist, singer, songwriter and founding member Billy Corgan has announced that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has left the group. Chamberlin joined the band Corgan founded in Chicago in 1988 and played on all their albums except Adore (1998).
Corgan will continue to write and record as SMASHING PUMPKINS with plans to head into the studio this spring."
At the time of writing this article there is no official word from Jimmy as to his reasons for leaving the Pumpkins. While this adds to the confusion from fans searching for an answer to the main question of why, there is not doubt that most people agree this decision could not have been an easy one. We could speculate reasons for weeks on end, but until the band are ready to divulge that information we should be wary of any rumors we read.

The message is still clear though, this is not the end of the Smashing Pumpkins. It is dawn of a new age for the Smashing Pumpkins; the band has evolved. Any form of change is met with a healthy dose of apprehension. It was (and still is) difficult for members of the fan base not to see the Smashing Pumpkins as those ‘original four’ members. It is undeniable that the music, energy and creativity behind the original force had was truly special. However, we’ve now had a decade since that line up was together for a brief handful of shows on the Arising tour.
This is nothing relatively new in the world of the Pumpkins. Even since the early days of Smashing Pumpkins we’ve become accustomed to the various musicians being invited into the studio or on tour with the group to help explore sounds and evolve the direction of the band. We now find the current hot topic mimicking the same discussion from back in 2007, when we first discovered that Billy and Jimmy would be the only two original members returning under the Smashing Pumpkins banner.
‘What makes this the Smashing Pumpkins?"
There is no right or wrong answer to this. The Smashing Pumpkins mean something different to each fan. It is not just the musicians, it is not just the sound and it is not just the name that we connect with in calling this group Smashing Pumpkins. We’ve now been in an era over the past few years where we as a community have had to ask ourselves this difficult question, even though we’ve had to deal with this in some form or another since the Mellon Collie era.
We have always found reasons, our own reasons for what makes this the Smashing Pumpkins. With the return in 07 some fans could not see this as the Pumpkins because James Iha and D’arcy were no longer involved, but they were the same fans that still called them the Smashing Pumpkins during the Adore and Machina eras without the ‘full original line up’. Was it purely based on the number of members, not the overall idea behind the name? It is always up to the individual.
As a fan base we can admit that we have been here before. We’ve ‘survived’ the departure of an original member before and it still delivered us music with which we’ve fallen in love. Currently as it stands, Billy Corgan is the Smashing Pumpkins. As much as some refuse to admit that, to a large portion of the Smashing Pumpkins and the wider music community out there, that is the way it has always been and always will be. When on The Hour back in November of 2008 Billy spoke about his time away from the Smashing Pumpkins during the Future Embrace era:
"Nobody (the public) wanted to see me not be in the band (Smashing Pumpkins) …
I wanted to move on with my life, but nobody else would."
– Billy Corgan – The Hour with George StroumboulopoulosThere are many popular bands from over the history of popular music that have gone on to have long successful careers with the one creative force and a range of musicians being a part of various eras of the bands life. Artists like Marilyn Manson, Robert Smith of The Cure, Tony Iommi and Black Sabbath and Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac to name a few have all been constant members of their respective bands. These are bands that started off as groups, a collective with a common goal but eventually led to one person being the sole key member. We are now in that era of the Smashing Pumpkins.
I’m sure back in the days when original members left and new members joined these acts, fans of the bands were asking themselves the same questions we as Smashing Pumpkins fans are pondering currently. All it takes is that one new song to get you hooked and you can have all your worries put to rest (as mentioned in the press release, Billy is now heading into the studio). So nothing from the ‘original 2009 plan’ has changed, except I think Billy will find fans and non-fans alike will be even more critical than ever before.
The enormity of losing an important member in regards to the sound of the band will be felt both in the studio and in the live arena. Whilst nobody can deny the chemistry between Billy and Jimmy was truly one of a kind, we have seen Billy create amazing music whilst Jimmy was absent. Even though Billy has openly talked about the frustration he felt during that period of the Pumpkins, lost without his ‘musical partner’, somehow out of that difficult time came some ground breaking critically acclaimed work as the Smashing Pumpkins.
So while the future is not what we had expected at the start of this year, there is still a future for this band and their songs. This is not the end, this is something we shouldn’t forget. The idea that created this band 21 years ago is still the same idea today, to create music unlike any other band out there. As echoed by all fans on the forum, whilst we are saddened by the announcement we all wish Jimmy the best for the future and thank him for everything he has given us over the years.
Let’s rock one last time with United States, one of the epics of the Zeitgeist era that allowed Jimmy to shine everynight this was performed. We’ll miss you Jimmy.
